Irish buyers made their presence felt at the two-day dispersal of Rhys and Huw Jones' Clywedog Holstein herd from Wrexham, buying most of the lead priced lots.

The sale, staged at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, peaked at 4000gns for a calved heifer sold on the first day which comprised the milking herd and young calves. Day two was made up of youngstock including in-calf heifers, bulling and yearling heifers which sold to 3800gns for a yearling.

Sale leader was Clywedog Fuel Roxy purchased by Cyril and Martin Millar, Coleraine, Co Londonderry. Classified VG86 in her first, this Melarry Fuel daughter which calved at 22 months of age is bred from 13 generations of Ex or Very Good-classified cows from the Roxy cow family. Her fourth dam was Denmire Burns Roxy 10 Ex94 which produced more than 130tonnes of milk.

Mr Millar also purchased the similarly aged Clywedog Fuel Bevin for 2800gns. Another by the same sire and VG86, she is the 11th generation of animals in the top grades going back to Calbrett Blackstar Bevin Ex91. She sold in calf to Westcoast Lighthouse.

A great grand-daughter of the Ex94 Denmire Burns Roxy 10, topped the young stock at 3800gns. This was Clywedog Lighthouse Roxy, an eight-month-old daughter of Westcoast Lighthouse, out of the VG88 SP cow, Clywedog Meridian Roxy 1013, purchased by Miss Walton, Burton, Wrexham

Selling at 3200gns was the fresh heifer, Clywedog Lambda Ruby which calved at 22-months of age. Bred from 13 generations of cows in the top two grades and from a Ruby cow family, she is by Farnear Delta-Lambda and out of the VG85-3yr SP cow, Warnelview Megawatt B Ruby. The buyers were Messrs Allen, Richhill, Northern Ireland who purchased another five at 2400gns and above.

Leading the cows at 2700gns was the second calver, Clywedog Adorable Helena 2026 VG87 SP, which sold in calf to Vogue, to Messrs Dodd, Chester. She gave more than 11,600kg in her first and is out of the Ex93-2E SP LP50 cow, Clywedog Bryant Helena.

Heifer calves peaked at 1100gns for a daughter of the top seller, Clywedog Pursuit Roxy 3129, a five-month-old by Pine-Tree-I Pursuit. She was purchased by Messrs Bradley, Newry, Northern Ireland.
