It was a warm one for this year’s Fenwick Show where exhibitors and spectators returned after a long two year absence.

Getting the all important tap for the supreme beef honours was the two-year-old Beef Shorthorn heifer, Highlee Magic Pixie, from Katie McIntyre, Flatterton, Inverkip. Having just started up her herd, this foundation female was purchased at Skipton in November and is a daughter of Coldrochie Leif, out of Highlee Magic Elf. She was shown two months in calf to Jason of Upsall.

The blue and white rosette among the cattle was awarded to a Limousin cross bullock from Louise Kerr, Cloquhairnan, Coylton. Reserve on the hoof champion at Ayrshire Rally, champion at Dalrymple and placed at Dalry Show, she is by Kinniside Mobydick and was bought from the Lairds at Carbello at Ayr market last October for £1750. Her dam is a Limousin cross British Blue cow.

The dairy section was topped by the April-born Holstein calf, Haysmuir Prolu from the Smith family of Haysmuir, Stewarton. Second at the Ayrshire Young Farmers’ Dairy Calf Rally, she is sired by Peak Tropic.

Overall sheep champion was a Beltex shearling from James Hodge and Claire Cuthbertson, Perceton Row, Dreghorn. This was Vicky’s Grenade, a son of Orkney Eurostar, purchased last year at the Carlisle Premier sale. He was champion at Dalry Show.

Best confined sheep was the Bluefaced Leicester champion, a gimmer from the late Robert McInnes, Greystone Knowe. His home-bred gimmer is a daughter of M2 Smearsett and bred from a Midlock dam.

Jackston April Grace made her mark in the Clydesdales when she stood champion for Jim Steel, East Kilbride. She is a daughter of Doura Master Eddie, out of Jackston Mary Rose and is full sister to Jackston Ronnie. She paraded in foal to Dillars Ollie for next spring.

Native beef (Judge: J Morton, Gretna). Champion – K McIntyre, Flatterton, Inverkip, with the Beef Shorthorn two-year-old heifer, Highlee Magic Pixie, purchased at Skipton in November. Pure bred continental cattle (Judge: J Morton). Champion – C and F Smith, Lawersbridge, Mauchline, with the six-month-old Charolais heifer, Lawersbridge Teardrop. This home-bred entry was calf champion at Catrine and Newmills and is by Whitecliffe Muskateer out of Lawersbridge Indi. Sole entry.

Highland cattle (Judge: M Moy, Pollock Country Park). Champion and reserve – R and E McMillan, Little Grenach, Rothesay, Isle of Bute. Supreme was Robag 8 of Isle of Bute, a two-year-old heifer, by Bob of Isle of Bute, out of Robag 1 of Teaghlach. Reserve was the three-year-old, Eilidh 8 of Isle of Bute, by the same sire but out of Eilidh 2 of Isle of Bute. All classes R and E McMillan.

Prime cattle (Judge: J Morton). Clydesdales (Judge: J Anderson, West Glen, Kilmacolm). Champion – A Steel and Son, Jackton, with the three-year-old, Jackston April Grace, a daughter of Doura Master Eddie, out of Jackston Mary Rose. She is full sister to Jackston Ronnie, and was paraded in foal to Dillars Ollie. Reserve – National Museum of Rural life with the nine-year-old, Dapple Mary Anna, purchased from the Black family of Collessie privately eight years ago. She is a daughter of Collessie Whinhill President and out of Dapple Elizabeth Ann. Pairs, mare with foal, foal – L Smith, Eaglesham. Yeld mare – A Steel and Son. Ridden heavy horse – M McDougall of Museum of Rural Life.

Blackface (Judge: W Stevenson, Balrazzie, Ballantrae). Champion and reserve – G and S Kerr, Middleton, Newton Mearns. Champion was a tup lamb by a £5500 Auldhouseburn, bred from a £1500 Allanfauld sired-dam. Reserve was a ewe lamb by the same sire, bred from a £750 Allanfauld dam. All classes – G and S Kerr.

Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: G Kerr, Sauchrie Mains, Maybole). Champion – RD McInnes, Greystone Knowe with a home-bred gimmer. She is sired by M2 Smearsett and bred from a Midlock dam. She was second at the Royal Highland Show. Reserve – DM Bryson, Laigh Logan, with a four-crop ET-bred ewe. She is by a Newbigging Walls tup bought at Kelso in 2016 for £2000. Tup, ewe, group – D Bryson. Tup lamb, gimmer, ewe lamb – RD McInnes.

Scotch Mule (Judge: G Kerr). Champion – G Allan, Highfield Place, Ochiltree with a gimmer purchased as a ewe lamb from Messrs Paton, Craig, Straiton. She is by the N4 Macqueston shared with Pinvalley and out of a Craig-bred ewe. She was champion at New Cumnock and Dalrymple shows. Reserve – CJ Guild and Son, Laight, New Cumnock with a five-crop ewe by a Culdoach sire, purchased as a part of a pen of 40 ewe lambs at Castle Douglas. Ewe – G Allan. Gimmer – CJ Guild. Ewe lamb and pen of three – J Dykes.

Border Leicester (Judge: J Smith, Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas). Champion and reserve – D Whyte, Whitelee Gate, Newton Mearns. Champion was a home-bred gimmer on her first outing. She is by Intock Island, which was bought as a tup lamb at Lanark, and bred from a Didcot Almighty dam. Reserve was a one-crop ewe that was fifth at the Royal Highland Show and is by Fordafourie Festival out of a Clola Double Deal sired-dam. All classes – D Whyte.

Suffolk (Judge: J Smith). Champion – L Miller, Cairndale, Grassyards, with a home-bred gimmer on her first outing. She is by a Scrogton tup and out of a Harpercroft ewe bought at Ayr market. Reserve – J Kerr, Broom Farm, Stewarton, with a January-born ewe lamb by Crewelands Kingsman, out of a Smithson-bred ewe. Tup, ewe lamb – J Kerr. Gimmer – L Miller.

Any other native breed (Judge: J Smith). Champion and reserve – N McDonald, Waterside. Supreme was a home-bred three-crop Cheviot ewe, bred from a Broomhillbank sire, bought at Lockerbie and out of a home-bred dam. Reserve was a shearling backed by home-bred genetics, being a son of Gothigill X4. All classes – N McDonald, Waterside.

Pure-bred continental (Judge: I Walker, Laigh Alticane, Pinwherry). Champion – J Hodge and C Cuthbertson, Perceton Row, Dreghorn, with the Beltex shearling, Vicky’s Grenade. A son of the Carlisle purchase, Orkney Eurostar, he was champion at Dalry Show. Reserve – S Anderson, Oldwalls, Galston, with a Beltex gimmer bought from the Withy Trees dispersal as a ewe lamb at Carlisle. She is by the 30,000gns Buckles Expresso. Tup, ewe, tup lamb, ewe lamb and group of three – J Hodge and C Cuthbertson. Gimmer – S Anderson.

Texel (Judge: I Walker). Champion and reserve – J Hodge and C Cuthbertson. Champion was a two-crop Douganhill-bred ewe, bought as a gimmer at Carlisle and on her first outing since. Reserve was a March-born ewe lamb by an Auchry tup. All classes – J Hodge and C Cuthbertson.

Prime lambs (Judge: J Smith). Champion and reserve – S Anderson. Champion was a pen of March-born three-quarter-bred Beltex lambs by home-bred tups. The reserve, were pure-bred Beltex lambs also born in March. Pen of three Suffolk cross lambs, pen of three other cross lambs, pen of three pure-bred lambs – S Anderson.
