Commercial cattle crowned champions of champions at Perth Show

This Limousin cross commercial heifer is jointly owned by Beth Wilkinson, Leyburn, and Gareth Small, Northern Ireland, and was previously champion at the Great Yorkshire and first at the National Beef Expo in May. Bred by Ms Wilkinson, she is by Ronick Hawk and out of the former show cow, Pocahontas.

The champions of champions was selected on a points system by the various inter-breed judges.

“It’s very hard to find any faults in her,” said the beef judge, Archie MacGregor, Allanfauld. “She is a well balanced animal and was brought out to perfection. She has a tremendous cover of meat on her being well fleshed across her plates – just a real good meat machine.”

Following the commercial champion in the cattle lines was the two-year-old Charolais heifer, Burradon Raquel, from Richard Hassell and Rachel Wyllie, of Brailes Livestock. She was brought out by freelance stockmen, Richard and Carol Rettie and was champion at Fife and West Fife shows.

The North-type Blackface winner was crowned supreme in the busy sheep lines for Tom and Mairi Paterson and son, Robert, Craigneich, Comrie. Their home-bred gimmer, which stood fourth at the Scottish National Show, is by a £1400 Newmill tup.

Reserve was the Beltex three-crop ewe, Sinclairs Daisy, from Alan Miller, The Lurg, Midmar, Inverurie, that was champion at Banchory and Turriff.

Heavy horse supreme was the two-year-old Clydesdale filly, Collessie Alanna, from Ronnie and Pete Black, Newton of Collessie.

Beef Shorthorn (Judge: R McNee, Over Finlarg, Dundee). Champion – M Cormack, brought out by Richard and Carol Rettie, Methven. This was the March, 2021-born Millerston Irania Rainbow, the reserve champion at the Royal Highland. She is by Portnadoran Maestro and out of Millerston Irania Linnet. Reserve – M and S Nairn, Balnabroich, Strathardle, with the March, 2021-born bull, Balnabroich Romulus, brought out by new stockman, Daniel Rowbotton. He is by the show bull, Millerston Man o' War, and out of Balnabroich Katia. Bull – M and S Nairn. 2019-born female – A Haigh. 2020-born female; 2021-born female – M Cormack. Calf – Trainview livestock.

AO beef native (Judge: R McNee). Champion – A Mylius and Partners with the yearling Lincoln Red bull, St Fort Archer, brought out by the Retties. Part of the 80 cow herd, he is by St Fort Excaliber and out of St Fort Anne. Reserve – JA Cameron's five-month-old Hereford heifer, Baldinnie 1 Kay, brought out by stockmen, Andrew Shaw and James Musgrave. She is by Solpol 1 National, out of Baldinnie 1 Kay 31 and was paraded in calf to Baldinnie 1 Carlin, due in October. Senior bull, female – JA Cameron. Junior bull – A Mylius and Partners.

Aberdeen-Angus (Judge: M Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford). Champion – Brailes Livestock's Weeton Blackbird, the champion from Fife Show and reserve at the Great Yorkshire and the National Show at Norfolk this year. The three-year-old heifer is a daughter of Rawburn Boss Hogg, and was bought for 3800gns at the Weeton dispersal. Her February-born bull calf, Brailes Fabulous, was paraded alongside her. Reserve – S Dick, Westerton, Cowie, with the junior champion from the Royal Highland Show, Stephick Evora. This October 2020 born heifer is by Gretna House Blacksmith and out of Weeton Evora. Highland (Judge: D Dempster, Keppoch Cottage, Crieff). Champion – D MacNaughton, Kelty, with the two-year-old heifer, Bryor Rose of Rannoch, a daughter of Seamus of Craycombe, out of Ilhavia of Rannoch. Champion at the National Show at Turriff, she was also champion at Angus, Fife, West Fife and Stars of the Future. Reserve – Balrownie Farms, Menmuir, Brechin, with the yearling bull, Gilleasbeag of Balrownie. He is by the private purchase Coirneal 3 of Balmoral and out of Iseabal 9 of Mottistone, which was bought at Stirling. Reserve male at Turriff. Senior bull – S Howie. Charolais (Judge: M Milne, Kennieshillock, Elgin). Champion – Brailes Livestock's two-year-old heifer, Burradon Raquel, bred by Chris Curry. Champion at Fife and West Fife shows, she is a daughter of Clench Lyle and out of Burradon Grace. Reserve – A Anderson, Easter Knox, Arbroath, with the yearling bull, Rutherston Sonny, a son of Balmyle Oscar which stood intermediate champion at Stirling Bull Sales in October, 2019, where he was purchased for 9500gns. He is bred from Rutherston Jenny and stood second at the Royal Highland Show. Senior bull – DM Lyle. Junior bull – A Anderson. 2019-born cow – DH Muirhead. 2020-born cow, 2021-born heifer, group of three – Brailes Livestock. Pairs – Balthayock.

Limousin (Judge: M Milne). Champion and reserve – R and J Graham, Airthrey Kerse, Bridge of Allan, with the top award going to the January, 2021-born heifer, Grahams Scarlet. A daughter of Gunnerfleet Lion, she is out of the show cow, Ironstone Dumandy. Reserve was the yearling bull, Grahams Stirling, which is bound for Carlisle in October. He is a son of Ampertaine Elgin and out of the show cow, Grahams Niomi. Senior bull – W Lawson. Junior bull, 2021-born female, pairs – R and J Graham. 2020-born female – M Cormack.

Simmental (Judge: M Milne). Champion – GL Clark, Broombrae, Auchtermuchty, Cupar, with the March, 2021-born bull, Broombrae Monty. He is by Roma Jaguar, out of the private buy, Innerwick Irene and stood reserve at West Fife Show. Reserve – H Duff, Pitmudie, Brechin, with the yearling heifer, Pitmudie Mulberry. Broombrae Monty was Simmental supreme for Gordon Clark

AO continental beef (Judge: M Milne). Champion – R Nelson, Cuttlehill, Crossgates, with the January, 2020-born bull, Little Wood Ontario, bought out of Carlisle for 4000gns last year. He is a son of Ballygrange Dudley, out of Luke Royal Jone. Sole entry.

Commercial (Judge: C Hendry, Heads of Auchinderran, Keith). Champion – B Duffton, Huntly, with the heifer, Black Magic, which is jointly owned with Beth Wilkinson, Leyburn, and Gareth Small, NI. Their Limousin cross was champion at the Great Yorkshire and first at the National Beef Expo in May. Bred by Ms Wilkinson, she is by Ronick Hawk and out of the former show cow, Pocahontas. She is by Homeacres Hugo out of Capitol Artemis, and stood reserve champion at the Royal Highland as well as champion at Angus and Border Union shows. Runner up was the British Toggenburg, Linnavon Luma. She is by Anjo Cardoon out of Ladeside Lynne. White female goat; coloured female goat; goatling; white female kid – Campbell family. Clydesdales (Judge: A Craig, Coylton, Ayrshire). Champion – RH Black, Newton of Collessie, Fife, with the two-year-old filly, Collessie Alanna. First at the Highland and champion at the Winter Fair, she is a daughter of Arradoul Balvenie and out of Roughlands Jasmine. Reserve – J Greenhill, Upper Tulloes, Forfar, with the second prize winner, Tulloes Emily, by the same sire. She was champion at Fife, West Fife, Fettercairn and Echt as well as champion of champions at the Perth online show last year. Her dam is Tulloes Lady Jane. Reserve – WD Simpson, Chapelhill, Perth, with the 12-year-old brood mare, Chapelhill Honey and foal at foot. She is a daughter of Glenmuir Lochaber out of Chapelhill Ursula. She is by Wells Premier, out of E-Kati of Nairnian, and was paraded with her foal, Mawburn, Ezri. Stallion, four years or over; colt two or three-year-old – L Wilson. Border Leicester (Judge: I Walker, Laigh Alticane, Pinwherry). Champion – D Whyte, Whitelea Gate, Newton Mearns, with his two-crop show winning ewe. She is by Clola Double Deal, and out of a ewe by Fordafourie Festival. Reserve – E Mill, Shawsmill, Cardenden, Fife, with a ewe lamb by Mearns Thunderstruck, which was bought at Lanark as a tup lamb, and out of a home-bred ewe. Shearling ram, ewe – D Whyte. AOB non-acc sheep (Judge: I Walker). Champion – C Simpson, Mains of Creuchies, Blairgowrie, with a Blue Texel gimmer, aged just 14 years-old Charlie owns eight ewes. She is by Inverbay Dambuster and out of Harestone Buttercup. Reserve – Team Innergellie, Kilrenny, Fife, with a two-crop Border Leicester bought at Carlisle where she stood champion for £1600. She is by a Knockglass sire and out of a Kilphin ewe. Shearling, ewe – Team Innergellie. Ram lamb, gimmer, ewe lamb, pairs – C Simpson.

Suffolk (Judge: T MacPherson, Luncarty, Perth). Champion and reserve – R Bryce, Chalmerston, Stirling, with the top honours going to a home-bred ewe lamb. She is a daughter of Redbrae Jaegerbomb, out of a home-bred ewe by Leitrim Lucky Lad, and took the same award at Drymen Show. The runner up went to a two-crop ewe by Leitrim Lucky Lad and out of a Sunnyhills X factor sired-dam. She was champion at Gargunnock and Dunblane shows. Aged ram – T A Sands. Reserve – R and S Duncan, Achdregnie, Glenlivet, with a two-shear ram bought for £1400 at Stirling, by a £1400 Newmill tup and out of a ewe by a £10,000 Auchnacloich. Blackface South-type (Judge: J Kay, Hartside, Oxton, Lauder). Champion – T and M Paterson, Dunruchan, Muthill, Crieff, with a one-crop ewe. She is by a £3200 Silloans and out of a £14,000 Dalchirla sired-ewe. Reserve – M Simpson, Sidlaw, with a ewe lamb, that was second at Angus Show. She is out of a Dalwyne ewe and by a £1000 Sidlaw sire. Aged ram, ewe, gimmer, pairs – T and M Paterson. Ram lamb – Tay and Torridon Estates. Shearling ram – S and W Heads. Ewe lamb – Sidlaw.

Cheviot (Judge: A Polson, Glenfinnan, Findon, Aberdeen). Champion – T Kerr, Colony, Muthill, Crieff, with a three-crop ewe that was bought in utero of a Broomhillbank-bred gimmer purchased at Lockerbie. She is by a North Synton-bred ram and stood reserve at Braco. Reserve – W Heads, Greendale Cottage, Galston, East Ayrshire, with a ewe lamb. She is by a Hownam Grange tup and out of a Harestone gimmer that was purchased at Lockerbie. Aged ram, ewe, gimmer, pair – T Kerr. Shearling ram – McCaig Farms. Ram lamb, ewe lamb – W Heads.

Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: S McClymont, Tinnis, Yarrow). Champion and reserve – J and M Forbes, Clunebeg, Pitlochry, with the top honours going to a ewe lamb by P5 Blarnavaid. Reserve was a home-bred shearling ram on its first outing, which will be offered for sale this year, being sired by a Happrew tup. Shearling ram, tup lamb, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb – J and M Forbes. Pairs – A and J Adam.

Lleyn (Judge: H Campbell, Pond Wood Cottage, Kettins, Blairgowrie). Champion – Messrs McGowan, Incheoch Farms, Alyth, with the home-bred shearling, Incheoch Knave. He is by Incheoch Jarl, which was used as a lamb before being sold to Shetland. He will be offered for sale at the on-farm sale this year being one of the highest performance index tups in the flock. Reserve – J and C Robertson, Carmont Valley Livestock, East Carmont, Stonehaven, with a two-shear ram jointly owned by CC Crawford. He was bought as a shearling from Over Whitlaw, Selkirk, at Carlisle. Aged ram, tup lamb, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb – Carmont Valley Livestock. shearling ram, pairs – Messrs McGowan.

Lleyn champion from Neil McGowan, Incheoch Farms

Texel (Judge: D Allan, Ballochneck, Buchlyvie). Champion – D McKerrow, Uppermill Tarves, Ellon, with a tup lamb, which will be sold at Carlisle this year. Sired by the 26,000gns Ettrick Earthquake, he is out of an Ettrick Eurowinner sired-dam. Reserve – R Cockburn, Hill Cottage, Errol, with a home-bred gimmer by the 17,000gns Sportsman Cannonball out of a dam by the 28,000gns Knock Banker. Fourth at the Scottish National Show at Biggar, she is destined for the breed sale at Lanark. Shearling, ewe, gimmer, ewe lamb, pair – R Cockburn. Ram lamb – D McKerrow.

Beltex National Show (Judge: J Little, The Guards, Wigton). Champion and reserve – A Miller, The Lurg, Midmar, Inverurie, with the top ticket going the three-crop ewe, Sinclairs Daisy, bought at Carlisle for 3000gns. She is by Kingledores Battleaxe, out of Broughton Bryony and was champion at Banchory and Turriff shows this year. The runner up was a shearling ram being sent to the Carlisle Premier sale. Lurg Goliath is by Woodies Explosive and was bred from the champion ewe. He took the same award at Turriff. Aged ram – S and R Wood. Shearling, ewe, ewe lamb, pairs, group of three – A Miller. Sinclairs Daisy the Beltex supreme from Alan Miller was reserve overall sheep

Cross sheep (Judge: J Taylor, Easter Ochtermuthill, Crieff). Champion – G Whyte, Lintibert, Muthill Crieff, with 47kg lambs. These Beltex crosses are by a Tiree tup and stood champion at Braco. Reserve – M Rattray, West Park, Auchterarder, with three 40kg Beltex cross lambs. They are by an Aultmore tup. Three Half-bred crosses; three ewe lambs; heavyweight continental lambs – G Whyte. Three Mule ewes – B MacDonald. Three gimmers J Steele. Three Mule gimmers; lightweight continental lambs – M Rattray. Three native ewe lambs – J and J McLaren.

JAC lambs (Judge: J Taylor). Champion – Ben MacDonald, Meadows of Ballied, Blairgowrie, with continental lambs. Reserve – Neil Messenger, Ayton, Abernethy, Perth, with the second prized continental lambs. Pure bred Suffolk or Suffolk cross, sired by native pure or cross – N Messenger. Sired by Continental – B MacDonald.
