Belted Galloway exhibitors were out in force for the breed's National and Centenary event, held at Wigtown Show, where the Adams family from Town End, Derbyshire not only lifted the breed championship but also the coveted overall champion of champions trophy with the six-year-old bull, Bigginvale Lightening.

Colin McKay, Broughton Mains, found his supreme overall in a bull brought out by Joanna Adams.

A son of Maybeck Bracken, out of Bigginvale Labilla, he is owned in partnership with his breeders, the Billings family and last month stood second in his class at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Heading up the Clydesdale section and standing as reserve overall was the four-year-old home-bred yeld mare, Burgess Outon Miracle, from Colleen Marshall, Newton Stewart. She is by Eskechraggan Ernest, bred from Rashiehillhouse Jessica Jean and last year stood reserve at the Great Yorkshire Show, and champion at Bute. This year, she was breed leader at Ayr and Stranraer.

Winning the Cuil Trophy for the supreme sheep was Jenni Cannon's one-crop Blue Texel ewe, Barallan Erika, from Redbrae, Wigtown. First in her class at Stranraer Show, she is by Saltire Blue Corona and out of a Craig Albert-bred ewe.

Galloway (Judge: J McCulloch, Auchengibbert). Champion and reserve – M McCornick, Barquhill, Wigtown. Supreme was the two-year-old in-calf heifer, Barquhill Almond. Champion at Stranraer Show, she is by Barquhill Barney and out of Klondyke Almond. Reserve was the yearling bull, Barquhill Buster. He is a son of Balgray Maximillion, out of a home-bred cow and stood second in his class at the Royal Highland Show. All classes – M McCornick.

White Galloway (Judge: J Corrie). Champion and reserve – D and T Ross, Romesbeoch Farm, Shawhead, Dumfries. Supreme was the two-year-old in-calf heifer which was purchased privately as a calf from Tim Oliver, Low House Farm, Haltwhistle. Reserve was the seven-year-old cow, Kylie, which stood champion at the National Show in 2019. All classes – D and T Ross.

Riggit Galloway (Judge: H Bunning, Penicuik, Midlothian). Champion – D and K Keiley, Carton Croft with the bull, Croft McDonald. He is a son of Craig McTavish, out of Croft Liquorice. All classes – D and K Keiley.

An AI daughter of Lodge Hamlet, she is out of Mid Bishopton Iron Maiden and is due to calf in October to Tweeddale Lennox. She stood supreme at Stranraer Show. Reserve – Messrs Oxley, Druchtag, Mochrum with the Limousin bull, Ronick Rocketman. Purchased at the Ronick production sale at Carlisle in June, he is sired by Plumtree Fantastic and out of Ronick Onsi. Bull – Messrs Oxley. Young bull – M Kevan, Low Barness Farm. Commercial cattle (Judge: D Watret). Champion and reserve – A and E Vance, Bridgehouse, Whithorn. Supreme was the two-year-old Limousin cross heifer, Dam She’s Glam. Sired by Homebyres Norham and out of the former show heifer, Too Glam To Give A Damn, she has already enjoyed success at the Welsh Winter Fair, last year, when she stood first in her class, as well as champion at Stranraer Show this year. Reserve was the Limousin cross steer, Hoopla. This 19-month-old was purchased at Livescot from Brian Harper and is by Greenwells Norman, out of a Limousin bulling heifer that Mr Harper had purchased from the Vances.
