There have been few better stockmen than Jack Ramsay, so it was extremely fitting when a bull bred by him and one that took his name won the overall Beef Shorthorn championship at United Auctions' Stirling Bull Sales.

Taking the supreme was Millerston Ramsay, the intermediate champion from relatively new breeders, Andrew Thornber and Daughters' Blackbrook herd from Halifax. Their April 2021-born bull was bought at the dispersal of the late Jack Ramsay's Millerston herd here as a calf at foot with the dam, Millerston Augusta Heidi Ex92, for 15,000gns. Ramsay is by Bushypark Tiger and was brought out by free-lance stockman, Allan Jackson who had 11 bulls forward of which all bar one landed a prize ticket.

First time February consignor, Alison Watt, who is better known for her pedigree Blondes from Birkenburn, Keith, was another with plenty to celebrate, when her reserve intermediate followed to take the reserve supreme. Strathisla Rowan, a March 2021-born bull is by the 5000gns Meonhill Lion King and out of the nine-year-old show cow, Strathisla Trixy. Rowan was also shown last year and secured several red tickets at Grantown, New Deer, Banchory and Turriff Shows.

Having brought out the supreme, Allan Jackson who runs 12 cows at Woodyett, Kirkfieldbank, Lanark, again triumphed to win the red, white and blue sash amongst the seniors with Headlind Red Star. This 25-month-old red roan is a son of Dunsyre Horatio Ex93, a bull bought privately that went on to win the overall championship at the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire and the reserve at the Royal Welsh, last year. His dam, Headline Rosette Moneypenny VG88, by Tofts Atlas, also boasts a show career having stood reserve junior at the Agri Expo as a calf.

Judge Iain Green, Corskie, found his runner up senior in Sowerbyparks Ricard, a March 2021-born bull from Sam Hunt and his father Graham, Sowerby. Backed by Canadian genetics, his retained sire, Sowerbyparks Magnus is an ET by the 2015 Agribition champion, Bell M Foreman, while the dam, Sowerbyparks Capri, is a Blelack Minstrel daughter.

Leading the juniors was the Irish-bred Burnside Red Bull, a May 2021-born entry from William and Jill McAllister, Kells, Ballymena. This youngster bred from the Glengloy Frigate daughter, Burnside Lovely Hanelle GP82, is by the AI sire, Fearn Godfather.

Just pipped at the post was Major John Gibb and his daughter Catriona's Glenisla Rioja, an April 2021-born bull by Glenisla Maestro – a son of Millerston Jamboree Ex94 – out of the Ex90 Glenisla Waterloo Naomi, by Glenisla Artic Storm.

A big line-up of heifers was topped by George Irving's Mountbenger Rachel, a rising two-year-old roan heifer from Yarrow, Selkirk. She is a daughter of Coldrochie Lincoln, out of the Ex90-classified Mountbenger Gabby and was paraded due to the 12,000gns Meonside Nosty.

The blue and white sash amongst the females was awarded to David and Tom Bradley Farmer's Meonside Irania Rainbow Roxy, a similarly aged roan heifer by the Canadian AI sire, DRS Super Mario. Her dam is Coldrochie Irania Rainbow.
