A scorcher of a day for Yarrow Show saw a South Country Cheviot, reign supreme amongst the sheep for brothers Calum and Duncan Hume, Sundhope, Biggar.
Judge Neil Hamilton picked out the winning Southie, a gimmer from a good show of sheep. This was her third championship of the season, having previously landed the tri-colour at Border Union and Peebles and a second prize rosette at the Royal Highland show. She is sired by Cossarhill Jumbo and out of a home-bred ewe.
Reserve inter-breed sheep was the Bluefaced Leicester champion, a gimmer from Alan Cowens, Philiphaugh Estate, Selkirk, brought out by shepherd, Scott Bell. She is by this year’s Royal Highland Show champion, a P3 Towdy Potts ram.

Philiphaugh also took the championship in the park-type Cheviot section with Carruthers City Lights a two-shear tup bought at Lockerbie, by Allanshaws Almighty.
Tom Tennant from Gilmanscleuch, topped the Clydesdales with his May-born filly foal, West Forth Bonnie, a Singlie Limited Edition daughter on her show debut.

North Country Cheviot park-type (Judge: G Dun, Gilston, Heriot) Champion – Sir FM Strang Steel, Philiphaugh, Selkirk with Carruthers City Lights, a Carruthers-bred two-shear tup by Allanshaws Almighty, bought for £6500 at Lockerbie last year. Reserve – G Davies and Partners, North Synton, Ashkirk with a March-born ewe lamb by Kinaldy Architect, out of a home-bred ewe. Prize winner at the Border Union, Peebles and Dalkeith. Tup, ewe – Sir FM Strang Steel. Tup lamb, gimmer, ewe lamb, female group – G Davies and Partners.
North Country Cheviot hill-type (Judge: A Hutcheon, Hartside Powburn, Alnwick). Champion – WN Douglas with a home-bred gimmer by a £5000 Badanloch tup. First at the Royal Highland, Border Union, Peebles and Wooler. Reserve – Mrs CM Reid, Boreland, Peebles with a three-crop-ewe by £1000 Instack. Champion here last year. Tup, gimmer – WN Douglas. Shearling, tup lamb – JF Irving and Son. Ewe – Mrs CM Reid. Ewe lamb – Sir FM Strang Steel.
Blackface (Judge: D Redpath, The Yett, Kelso) Champion – S McClymont and Son, Tinnis, Yarrow with a one-crop-ewe by a £14,000 Glenrath, out of a £17,000 Happrew-sired ewe. Champion at the Border Union Show. Reserve – B Renwick and Sons, Blackhouse, Yarrow with a one-crop-ewe by a £25,000 Midlock sire out of a £13,000 Glenrath-sired dam. Reserve at Peebles. Ram, gimmer, male group, overall group – RA McClymont and Son, Kirkstead, Yarrow. Shearling, ewe lamb, pair of lambs, female group – B Renwick. Ram lamb, ewe – S McClymont and Son. Shepherd’s class – D Faulds, Kirkstead.
AOB (Judge: G Dun, Gilston, Heriot) Champion – Sir FM Strang Steel with a Bluefaced Leicester gimmer by P3 Towdy Potts and bred from K10 Kirkstead ewe. Reserve – Sir FM Strang Steel with a Bluefaced Leicester ewe by M1 North Burndale and bred from a home-bred ewe by H16 Mendick. First prize winner at several shows last year. All classes – Sir FM Strang Steel.
Prime lambs (Judge: A Hutcheon) Champion – G Davies and Partners. Best three prime lambs (over 40kg) – G Davies and Partners. Best three light weight lambs (under 40kg) – W and M Rutter, Greenhead.
