Dairy goats

Breed records must have been broken amongst a bumper show of dairy goats, when Guilden Erin, a third kidder running through from Gordon Webster and Smith, secured her fourth consecutive championship win at the Highland.

This seven-year-old British goat from Guildy Den, Monikie, Dundee, is a bit of a star in both the show ring and the production stakes, having previously landed the majority of top awards at all the Scottish Goat shows combined with the tri-colours at two Great Yorkshire Shows. Add to that average milk yields of 5.5kg every day since kidding in February, 2020, which is fed to calves, and Erin has certainly paid her way over the years.

A red ticket holder from the AOV class, this white veteran female is a daughter of the British Toggenburg, Guilden Blue and bred from the British Saanen, Toddbrook Elentari. However, this big win came as a bitter-sweet moment for the Webster and Smith team, as Erin is now set to enjoy a worthy retirement at Guildy Den.

There was more good news to come for the Dundee duo when Guilden Glory 8, a three-year-old second kidder landed the reserve honours. This British Toggenburg is backed by home-bred genetics on both sides being sired by Guilden Beckham and out of the former Highland Show champion, Guilden Glory 2.

Pygmy goats

There has been a huge demand and interest in pygmy goats in recent years, so it came as no surprise that it was a cracking entry that picked up the supreme honours for open farm owner, Ailene Charlton, Nether Kirkton, Meikleour, Perthshire.

Her star performer was Brucklay Harmony, a six-year-old milker and former Scottish pygmy goat champion bred by Clare Brucklay, Bridge of Cally. This brown and white female is by Moorview Hysopp and bred from Brucklay Bess.

The farm which has been breeding pygmies for seven years and is also home to alpacas, bagot goats, miniature donkeys and meerkats, also won the reserve title with a daughter of the champion, Aylswood Tutti, a three-year-old black and white second kidder by Pennrad Ernie.

Boer goats

Aberdeenshire breeders, Malcolm and Maureen Ross, Balmedie, scored a hat-trick amongst the Boer goats, judged by Welshman, Andrew Morrey, winning the red, white and blue sash for a third consecutive year at Ingliston.

The couple who previously ran dairy goats but switched to Boer for an easier way of life some 10 years ago, bagged the supreme with the home-bred doeling, Balmedie Garva, a yearling by Topknot Tonic, a buck bought privately from Suffolk-based breeder, Nicola Knott, out of Balmedie Carva.

Adding to the celebrations, the couple also lifted the reserve honours with a two-year-old that kidded twins in February. Balmedie Faye is another by Topknot Tonic, but out of Balmedie Aster – one of 10 breeding females in the herd and the dam of the Ross' 2019 champion winner here, Balmedie Dancer.
