The recent passing of Jim McArthur, formerly of Balwill Farm, Balfron, Stirlingshire, was a severe blow to the industry and, of course, his family.
Jim, beloved husband of Janet and a much loved father to Marion and Ann, and grandfather of Marion, David and Deborah, passed away peacefully at home at the age of 84.
He was a successful dairy farmer throughout his working life and was a countryman in every fibre of his being, but his great passion was the Clydesdale horse. In this respect he was legendary on an international scale.
The renowned Balwill stud left its mark not only across the UK, but also as far away as Australia where he exported stallions. Those included Balwill Knockout and Balwill Print.
Jim was a lifelong member of the Clydesdale Horse Society and was on the judges’ panel for many decades. This meant that his judging skills took him far and wide, including a long trip to Australia to judge their major Clydesdale show.
Jim’s other great passion in later years was, with Janet, the enjoyment of Scottish country dancing, a hobby which took them far and wide across Scotland, making many friends along the way.
All-in-all, Jim’s was a life well lived.
