A FANTASTIC turnout of farmers attended the first ever West region open stock judging competition on Friday, June 9 at Grangehall farm, Pettinain by kind permission of the Lawrie family.

Following a decline in numbers at the event traditionally held at Ayr show, the revamped competition was a huge success attracting 300 farmers and YF members through the gates.

Overall Winner on the night was Jack Wight, Townfoot farm, Symington who took the top prize in the open gents section scoring a total of 355 points. The open ladies section was won by Sarah Fox and the under 14’s by Murray Lawrie. In the Young Farmer’s section, the top scoring junior team was Dumfries and Galloway accumulating a total of 956 points and comprising of team members, Angus McClymont, Charlotte Colley and Wilson Sloan. The winning senior team was Avondale with a total of 970 points and team members included Andrew Neilson, Scott Frame and James Hamilton. In the individuals section, the junior winner was Gregor Duncan from Callander and in the senior section, Scott frame from Avondale.

West Region Chair, Hazel Watt commented on the evening: “I was absolutely delighted that our west open stock judging was a roaring success. I am overwhelmed with the positive feedback and the attendance we had at the event – not only from our members. It is clear to see that stock judging is very much alive and kicking in the West region and that’s something I hope continues,”
