RHS SAYFC

After 10 years of competing for the SAYFC’s ‘big one’ – the ‘Stockman of the Year’ title – Scott Bourman, finally triumphed to achieve his dream of taking the overall.

This meant that the Carluke member was hitting the final score of a hat-trick for the Lanarkshire District, which has now produced the champion for a third consecutive year.

Scott (27) proved he was in his own league, being seven clear points ahead of the runner-up, Andrew Neilson, Avondale (Lanarkshire) and a whole 20 points in front of James Graham, SSS (Clyde and Central), who was placed third overall.

During the day, Scott was in a beef pairing for Lanarkshire with Neola Mitchell, Biggar, which he has previously won with Scott Sommerville, plus he had also previously been a member of the team competition receiving second and third on several occasions.

He works at home at Middlehouse Farm, Carluke, where the family buys and fatten cattle as well as calving and selling Limousin heifers which calve all year round. Scott also runs a pedigree flock of 20 Suffolk sheep, along with bought in store lambs and in-lamb ewes.

Carluke YFC has been a big part of Scott’s life and he was on the committee for 10 years until earlier this year. A strong advocate for YFC, he said: “Young Farmers is the best organisation in the world, with so many different competitions to get involved in. Winning the YFC Stockman of the Year was always my goal as it is the most prestigious competition to win.”

He also paid tribute to coaches past and present and this year’s Lanarlshire trainers were David Clark, Alan Clark, Robert Laird and John Adamson.

Once again it was Clyde and Central A that took home the Glasgow Herald Trophy for the best team. This was Dexter Logan, Ross Johnstone, Stephanie Dick, Stephen Taylor, James Graham and Karyn McArthur. Runners-up were Ayrshire A – Struan McGregor, Cameron McGregor, Daniel Hodge, David Smith, Scott Anderson and Andrew Struthers, with Lanarkshire A’s team of Andrew Neilson, James Hamilton, David Mitchell, Amy Lindsay, Scott Frame and Amy Laird, taking third.

Topping the dairy section was Struan McGregor, Ayrshire, who also took the dairy pair title with brother, Cameron. Andrew Adam waved the flag for Angus Tayside, when he triumphed in the beef section, whilst beef pairs was won by Stephanie Dick and Stephen Taylor, of Clyde and Central. Another win for Lanarkshire saw Scott Frame lead the way in the sheep section, also taking home the sheep pairs prize with Amy Laird.

In the junior section, Amy Bryce, of Clyde and Central, took home the big prize with team-mate, Orla Duncan, picking up second. Third was Arran Callander, Dumfries and Galloway.

Orla and Amy, alongside Rebecca Bryce, lifted the junior team title for Clyde and Central A. Whilst Ayrshire grabbed both second and third place in the teams with Ayrshire A’s Abbie Montgomerie, Adam Montgomerie and Craig Cochrane, being runners-up and Ayrshire B’s Alexander Mitchell, Robbie Hamilton and Callum Watson, in third.
