Sir, – I read with interest The Gleaner's comment's on fertiliser prices (October 6, 2018) and that UK-made ammonium nitrate was up a whopping 31% in one year, mainly due to higher gas prices.

I would urge farmers to shop around as some of the smaller independent fertiliser manufactures/importers can often offer considerable savings without compromising on quality.

I would also invite arable farmers to avail themselves of proven technologies, such as the Yara N-Sensor. This hand-held device measures the level of chlorophyll in cereal, potato and many other crops before final application of nitrogen and can tell you whether you need to apply any more nitrogen and, if so, how much.
