SIR, – I was appalled to learn that the British Veterinary Association believed that fully qualified vets working in UK abattoirs should be paid less than the proposed minimum threshold of £30,000.
It takes seven years to qualify to practice as a vet and we demean them by paying them a pathetically low salary in the mid £20,000s. The BVA and NFUS need to get a grip and fight for decent salaries for vets. Even 30k seems far to low when you consider the take home pay after tax etc.
