There's gold in them thar fields! Most farmers, especially those near Roman settlements, have been asked for access to their fields by metal detectorists – and it could prove worthwhile.
A rare 16th century silver coin has been unearthed on a farm in Roxburghshire recently by Galashiels enthusiast, Dave McDougall. His rare find was a 1582 James VI silver 30-shilling coin – though to be worth up to £4500.
So, if someone comes knocking, check out their credentials, reach agreements and you could have a share of the money! Better still, take up the hobby yourself ... you could unearth that plough point or haybob you didn't put on properly the last time.
