SIR, – Well done for your story on the Great Yorkshire Show going ahead in March 13 issue.

It was most welcome news and gives us all hope for the future with a ‘can do’ mentality. The director showed real insight when he talked of solitude and mental health in the agricultural community, and the show’s role in helping alleviate that.

This is in stark contrast to our own Royal Highland Show, which could not wait to cancel at the earliest opportunity.

The reason they gave me for not postponing the event until the first half of August, when all Covid-19 restrictions would have been lifted, was because of the farming calendar and the unpredictability of Covid-19. I found this to be a very poor response.

I am aware of the precarious financial situation with the show’s organisers, RHASS and holding a full show in August would have made a large amount of income to ease those fears, instead letters being sent out asking for donations to ‘Save our show’.

I find this hard to take.
