SCOTLAND’S summer show season kickstarted with Kilmaurs Farmers Society’s 115th show, which was well attended by visitors and exhibitors, and blessed with sunshine from start to finish.

Reigning supreme show champion was Hugh Montgomerie, of Newlands, Kilmaurs, with Kilmaurs Alexander Christine 2, a second calved Holstein Friesian, classified VG87.

Standing reserve to the Montgomeries in the dairy section was Robbie and Billy Scott, Shacklehill, Mossblown, with his Ayrshire, Bruchag Destry Cardine, which was purchased at the Bruchag dispersal sale, last February.

In the commercial cattle section, Amy Scott, Meikle Ittington, Ardrossan, took the championship with Black Jack, an 11-month-old Limousin cross bullock, which was purchased at the YF calf rally at the Caledonian Marts, in March.

Auchengree Clydesdales led the way in its section, with Auchengree Amy, a two-year-old filly, while the McKinneys’ Auchengree Donte, a three-year-old gelding, was reserve.

LEADING awards:

Holstein Friesian (Judge: E Kennedy, Perryston, Ayr). Champion and inter-breed dairy champion – J and H Montgomerie, Newlands, Kilmaurs, with Kilmaurs Alexander Christine 2. She is a second calver, and most recently calved on October 3, 2017. She has given 7019 litres in 177 days, and is classified VG87. Reserve – W and R Scott, Shacklehill Farm, Mossblown, with Clauchlands Trisha 26, by Altaghost. She was purchased when Mr Scott judged the Border and Lakeland Club Sale in February, last year, where she was part of the Clauchlands reduction sale. She is giving 46 litres per day. Cow or quey – J and H Montgomerie. Friesian derby – W and R Scott. Calf – Rory Scott.
Ayrshire (Judge: E Kennedy). Champion and reserve inter-breed dairy champion – W and R Scott's Bruchag Destry Cardine, by Hestry Destry. She was purchased at the Bruchag dispersal sale in Carlisle as an in-calf heifer. She calved in February and is currently giving 35 litres per day. All classes – W and R Scott. Calf – Kyle Scott.
Beef cattle (Judge: Mrs P Goldie, Newbie Mains Farm, Annan). Champion and overall beef champion – Miss A Scott, Meikle Ittington Farm, Ardrossan, with Jack Black, an 11-month-old Limousin bullock. Purchased at the Young Farmers’ rally sale at Caledonian Marts, in March, he is by Huntershall Jimbo and out of a Limousin-cross cow. He was bred by Douglas MacDonald, from Tyree Farm, Benderloch. All classes – Miss Amy Scott. 
Clydesdale (Judge: W McInnes, Auchenlaw, West Overland, Hurlford). Champion –Auchengree Clydesdales, Eastbank Farm, Lenzie, with Auchengree Amy. This lightly shown two-year-old filly is by Auchengree Shuggie, and is out of the Carnaff Caledonia-sired mare, Ballykennedy Dolly. Reserve – C McKinney, Braeside Avenue, Moodiesburn, with Auchengree Donte, a three-year-old gelding by Dairylough Lord Mic-Ki, out of Carnaff Elaine-Marie, a Millisle Power Boat-sired mare. Donte was reserve champion at Beith and Houston last year. Yearling/two-year-old, pair – Auchengree Clydesdales. Gelding – C McKinney. Young handler – J Burks, Eastbank Farm, Lenzie.
