SCOTLAND'S sizzling summer was a distant memory at Chapelton last weekend, but there was nonetheless a competitive turnout of sheep, and some big hitters on show in the cattle classes.

Leading that sheep section were Greg and Hazel Laughton, East Shawtonhill, with a Texel gimmer, by Castlecairn Vinney out of a home-bred ewe, that was, on its only other show outing, first-placed ewe lamb at Strathaven last year.

Standing in sheep reserve overall was the Blackface champion from Gavin Donald, of Craigview, Sandford – a four-shear tup, by a £12k Gass, that was bought from Elmscleugh as a lamb, and was recently first-placed at the Highland.

The big Holstein cow that led the dairy section took overall show honours for WW Frame, of Craigthornhill, Glassford, Strathaven. She was Craighill Convoy Nell, a third-calver cow, by Warnelview Convoy, that was previously champion at East Kilbride.

Leading the beef was Limousin cross heifer Lily, the prime cattle champion from R and J Hamilton, of Mid Shawtonhill. She was sired by a Netherlands bull that was bought as a calf-at-foot with a French-bred cow in Carlisle, and out of Mini me, the Limousin cross BB heifer that was supreme champion at the Winter Fair.
