A YEARLING heifer led the way in a bumper line-up of Herefords, and marked a best result at the Agri-Expo for Boomer Birch and Graham Brindley's Stafford-based Sky High herd.

The lads, who run just 10 females in their herd and who have been showing at the event for five years, ruled supreme with Sky High 1 Luscious Lucy, an October 2017-born heifer which is a maternal sister to the record price Hereford female of 11,000gns achieved at Shrewsbury, last December. Bred from Romany 1 Lucy, she is an AI daughter of the Cogent bull, SMH King Size 87K and stood second in her class at the breed's national show and at two local shows.

Claiming the reserve overall title was Philip and Laura Vincent's Pulham 1 Remitall, a February 2018-born bull calf by Romany 1 Machine, a stock bull which the Vincents bought privately as a weaned calf and that has bred females in excess of 4000gns. The dam, Solpoll 1 Starlet, was also bought privately as a weaned calf for the 40-strong cow herd based at White House Farm, Coles Common, Pulham Market, Norfolk.

Back among the females, it was a 14-month-old heifer named Normanton 1 Blue Leg from William and Tim Livesey's herd at Manor Farm, The Hollow, Normanton Le Heath, which stood reserve. She is a daughter of the 2016 Royal Highland Show and Royal Welsh Show inter-breed champion, Normanton 1 Laertes, a bull which stood champion here four years ago and which the Liveseys kept at home to work in the 180-strong herd. Bred out of Llancillo Hall Bertha, this was the family's third championship in fourth years of showing at the Agri-Expo.

Fife breeders, John and Margaret Cameron, who run 35 females at Balbuthie, Kilconquhar near Leven, secured the reserve male honours with Baldinnie 1 Chawa – an AI son of Romany 1 Lawbreaker on its first outing. The first calf bred out of Baldinnie 1 Cathy, a dam which won her class at the Highland Show in 2017 and which has stood champion at Fife and Perth shows, she is destined for Stars of the Future Calf Show, this weekend.
