SHORTHORN breeders rounded off the individual breed classes on Saturday, with the senior championship going to Tom and Kate Madden's female champion, Ballyvaddy Tessa.

This 16-month-old heifer is an AI daughter of the 10,000gns Dakota of Upsall, out of a previous Ballyvaddy Tessa, this time an EX91-classified dam. On her first outing, she has recently been sold in a private transaction to James Cameron and Valerie Orr of Trainview Livestock at Forfar.

Brother and sister duo, Kenny and Sally Mair from Kinnermit, Turriff, who are relatively new to the breed and were exhibiting at the event for the first time, stood runner up in the seniors with Muiresk Lord Mair. This September, 2017-born bull is bred from Alvie Lovely Jemima – one of the 10-cow herd's foundation females which was carrying Lord Mair when bought privately two years ago. On his first outing with the Mairs, he is by Alvie Galaxy.

Another calf from Aberdeenshire breeders and first time exhibitors, the Comyn family of Rattray Estate, Home Farm, Peterhead, secured both the junior championship and the reserve honours in the native junior championship. Brought out by Calum and Ann Clark, this March-born heifer is by a former reserve junior champion here, Galla Hercules and out of Hildaland Madeline – a female which was bought with a calf at foot and in-calf with Maddie from the late Matthew Budge's dispersal on Orkney. First in her class at Tarland and third at Turriff, she will join the 10-cow herd for breeding.

Regular winner, Jack Ramsay from Mauchline, Ayrshire, claimed the reserve junior honours with Millerston Man O War. He is an April-born bull calf by the the former Highland Show and Stirling Bull Sales champion, Meonhill Charlie Chaplin, which has bred sons to 20,000gns. The dam, Millerston Irania Flame, is an equally good breeder, having also sold sons to 20,000gns, as well as breeding last year's reserve junior champion.
