SOME 60 dairy cattle were forward for the South-west Scotland Dairy Show, at Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas, which included competitions for the Jersey, Holstein, Brown Swiss and Ayrshire breeds.

Judge Bryce Sloan, Darnlaw, Ayrshire, found his supreme overall champion in the champion Holstein, Colvend Atlas Rox, an Ex94 classified cow from Steven and Tracey Roan, Dalbeattie. Fresh in her seventh at the beginning of August, she is giving 44 litres per day, having produced 75 tonnes in her lifetime to date. A seventh generation Excellent classified cow from the Roxy family, she previously stood second here last year and at Dumfries and Stewartry Shows.

Reserve supreme went to Hexham breeder, Richard Baynes' fifth calved Ayrshire cow, West Mossgiel Miss Modern 28 Ex94-3E. By West Mossgiel Aramis, she was purchased for 3000gns when she stood champion at the Northern National Ayrshire Sale in 2017 from the late Stuart Gilliland. Calved 42 days previous and giving 68kg, with a lifetime yield of 57,017kg to date she stood third in the senior cow class at AgriScot last year.

Reserve Holstein champion was Errolston Gold Ricki VG88 (Goldwyn) from Brian and Valerie Davidson, Errolston, Annan, while Halmyre Urr Louise 254 Ex90 (Reality) from Keith Davidson, stood reserve in the Ayrshires.

Securing the Brown Swiss championship was Kedar Alino Carmen from Jonny Lochhead, Mouswald, Dumfries. This heifer also stood first in the three-year-old class and was honourable mention at the UK Dairy Day. Having calved fresh in May, with a Jedi heifer calf, she has produced 4455kg at 4.51% BF and 3.55% P so far this lactation. Reserve was Robert and Sheila McColm's Soulseat Faust Jenny VG87 (Energie) from High Borland, Stranraer.

Clydevalley Tequila Flora 2 EX91 from Ali Cook, Lochmaben, stood champion in the Jerseys. This third lactation cow is 70 days fresh and giving 42 litres per day. Purchased privately from breeder Robert Hunter, she stood champion at Dumfries Show, last year, and was second in the maiden heifer class at UK Dairy Expo in 2015. Her daughter, by Vindication, will be sold at the Black and White sale at Carlisle on December 5, 2018. Reserve was R Buchanan's Tintoview Tequila Blondie (Tequila).

The younger generation put on an impressive show in the junior showmanship classes and saw Ruby Patterson win the junior section, while her cousin, Katlyn McCormick, ruled supreme in the seniors.

Andrew Roan led Colvend Classic Honey to win the junior calf class, while Rory Lamont led Brian and Michael Yates’ Logan Diamondback B Jodie to win the senior calf class.
