The young breeders class was won this year by David Moir, Home Farm, Cairness, at his first attempt.
This was with a home-bred pair of Beltex cross lambs weighing in at 36kg. They were sired by a Culshangus ram and out of David’s own home-bred Beltex cross Texel ewes.
There was a great turnout for the sheep young handlers competition, which keeps growing in popularity. There was a particularly strong entry in the under 12 section, where the handlers were under the scrutiny of judge, David Cunningham, Walkerdyke.
Winner of the under 12s was Isla Dempster, Castlehill, Lockerbie, who took the first prize showing her home-bred Texel cross Beltex ewe lamb.
The overall champion young handler, however, came from the over 12s section, where the experience of April Skelton, Little Low Wood, Lamonby, Penrith, proved too much for her rivals.
She had previously taken the title of Cumbrian Young Handler of the Year, was champion handler at AgriExpo and also at Countryside Live.
