One and Only, a 480kg pure-bred Limousin heifer from John Williams led the way at the Beef Expo Commercial Cattle Show, staged at North West Auctions, Kendal.

The show – part of the National Beef Association's one-day business event – attracted a large number of Scottish exhibitors and a bumper line-up of quality calves.

Judge Gavin Scott, Linlithgow, found his supreme overall in a home-bred 13-month-old heifer from Mr Williams' 20-cow herd from Trawsfynydd, Gwynedd. One and Only is a daughter of the AI sire, Waindale UFO, bred from a Huntershall Philip-sired cow, and secured the championship honours at Nefyn Show on her sole previous outing. She is bound for the Royal Welsh Show, and will be retained for breeding.

Flying the flag for Scotland, Jennifer Hyslop, who is now based Airthrey Kerse, Stirling, took the reserve honours with Queen of Hearts, another home-bred animal by Waindale UFO. This 497kg Limousin cross yearling is out of a home-bred Charolais cross cow and has previously taken first places at Countryside Live and the East of England Show. Queen of Hearts is also entered for the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire Shows.

There was more success for the Scots when Alister and Liz Vance and their daughter Amy, picked up the steer championship, with Doodle Bug, another Limousin cross. No strangers to the top awards, having won the Beef Expo event at Carlisle some years ago, their best this time from Bridgehouse, Whithorn, was a Limousin cross bought from Messrs Edwards for £1200 at last year's Welsh Winter Fair. He is by the AI sire, Lodge Hamlet out of a Limousin cross cow and already boasts a notable show career having stood first in his class at Ayr and part of the inter-breed group of three. A year old today (Friday), this 510kg entry is also bound for the Royal Highland and the Great Yorkshire.

Reserve steer champion was Mikey Rowlands' Dark Destroyer, a 546kg Limousin cross from Llanidloes, Powys. Bred by DJ Davidson and purchased for £1650, this 11-month-old entry was making his show debut.

The Welsh came out tops in the baby beef section, judged Tudur Edwards, with Spice Girl from GH and AH Roberts, Gaerwen, Anglesey, taking the tri-colour. Their show stopper, a Limousin cross heifer, was bred by JM and AM Lewis, Llanwrda.

Shakira, a July 2018-born Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Wilkinson and Marwood, Leyburn, North Yorkshire, bagged the blue and white sash amongst the babies. Bred by John Smith-Jackson and bought at Hexham in the spring, Shakira is by Hightown Jacko and bred from a Waindale UFO-sired dam
