Despite somewhat damp, dreich weather conditions, a strong turnout of quality livestock was on parade at Lesmahagow Show where the Smith family from Greentowers enjoyed a cracking day winning their first champion of champions trophy.

Overall judge, John Struthers, Intockhouse, tapped out the inter-breed beef champion, a 21/2-year-old home-bred Limousin heifer as his supreme overall. Brocklinn Miketa, by Unesco and of Roundhill H Gero Flee, was paraded five months in calf, having stood champion at Strathaven last year.

"All the inter-breed winners were of high quality, but the Limousin caught my eye as soon as I saw her. She's the best Limousin I have seen in a long time and she is correct throughout," said Mr Struthers, who had to select a winner from the inter-breed beef, dairy, sheep, Clydesdale horse, poultry and dog winners.

Beef judge, Stewart Lathangie, Pyeston, found his reserve winner in the senior Beef Shorthorn bull, Balgay Journeyman which first won the native breed section for M Lockhart, Rosebank. He is by Glenisla Zeta and is set to take on the Royal Highland show this year

Over in the dairy lines, judge George Borland, Mauchline, selected a young Holstein cow in milk from the Bryson family's Carnduff herd from Strathaven, as his supreme winner. Carnduff Mincio Annabell, a VG88 second calver is by Bertaiola Mincio and is giving 45 litres a day.

And, a busy sheep section which featured the Scottish National Texel show saw the winner from this section take the supreme. This was a home-bred gimmer on her show debut from Robert Cockburn's Knap flock from Hill of Errol, Perth, who the previous week scooped the same award at Fife Show, with a different gimmer.

Reserve supreme sheep, presented by judge Alister Vance, Bridgehouse, was the lead Charollais, a home-bred gimmer from Ben Radley, who was winning his first breed title here.
