A cracking turnout for the Highland Cattle Society's third National Gathering, this year staged at Westmorland County Show, not only resulted in a big win for Dexter Logan's two-year-old heifer, but also an inter-breed native championship and reserve overall in the pairs for the breed.

Show stopper was Mr Logan's well-known show heifer, Ban Larla Morag 9 of Blairlogan, from Greenhead, Alva. A daughter of Logan of Muingairigh bred from a previous home-bred Ban Larla that was champion at the Great Yorkshire in 2011, this youngster has already made her mark on the show circuit, taking the breed honours at Drymen, Stirling and the Great Yorkshire. She was also senior female champion at the Stars of the Future last year, and reserve at Beith and Dalmally, this year.

Shortlisted in the inter-breed cattle championship, this two-year-old heifer also went on to win the overall native honours and together with the Ranch and Earn fold's Hector of Earn, a yearling bull, teamed up to land the reserve supreme in the prestigious Burke Trophy pairs competition behind a Hereford duo.

Reserve breed champion was the three-year-old heifer, Marina of Borland, a Stepdancer 3 of Glengorm daughter, from Miss R Thomas and E Davies. She was bred by KCR Howman, Blairgowrie and bought last year at Oban. The dam is Maireared Ruadh 4 of Borland.

There was more success for the Scots when they won the top two awards amongst the juniors with the championship presented to the Ranch and Earn fold's yearling heifer, Frangag Beg 3 of Earn. She is by Angus Rundh of Wester Croachy, out of Frangag Beg 6 of Scourie, and stood reserve at Perth. The blue and white sash was bagged by Stuart and Rosemary Hunter's calf, Subhlair 2 of Hunters.
