THE sun certainly shone on Carsphairn, as strong show of stock pulling in a great turnout of spectators.

Picked as the champion of champions, by John Finlay, Blackcraig, was the Bluefaced Leicester winner, a tup hogg, from local breeder, Robert McTurk, Barlaes.

The overall Blackface winner was a Midlock-bred ewe, from Davie Morrison, Dalwyne. Winning the inaugural Bertie Cuthbertson memorial trophy for the best Blackface ewe hogg in the open Blackface section, was an entry from David Ferguson, Drannandow.

The young handlers section was won by Matthew Sinclair, Carnavel.

Blackface confined (Judge: D Finlay, Shancastle, Moniave). Champion and reserve overall Blackface – J and F Burns, Craignell, New Galloway with a tup hogg. He is by £3000 Dalwyne, and out of a ewe by an £8000 Dyke. Reserve – J Wallace, Fingland, Dalry with a ewe hogg. Tup – R McTurk, Barlaes. Tup hogg – J and F Burns. Ewe hogg – J Wallace. Ewe and lamb, ewe lamb, tup lamb, group of three – R Nixon, Marbrack, Carsphairn.

Blackface open (Judge: D Brown, Muirhouse, Symington). Champion and overall Blackface – D Morrison, Dalwyne, Givan, with a Midlock-bred ewe, Queen Lizzie. Bought at the Lanark online sale for £3100, she is by £6000 Dalwyne. Reserve – D Ferguson, Drannandow with Belle, a ewe hogg. By a £9000 Dyke sire, she is out of an £18,000 Dyke-sired ewe. This was her first show outing, ably shown by Phoebe and Sophie Ferguson. Tup hogg (rough), ewe, tup lamb – D Morrison. Shepherd's class – A McMillan, Dalwyne. Ewe hogg, ewe lamb – D Ferguson.

Commercial (Judge: D Finlay). Blackface ewe with pure lambs – J Wallace, Fingland. Blackface ewe and Mule lambs – J Guild, Laight.

Mules (Judge: D Finlay). Champion – W Welsh, Burnfoot, Sanquhar with a ewe lamb. She is by a loan lamb, Lagganpark P1, and out of a home-bred ewe, by a Beoch sire. Reserve – R Ferguson with a ewe hogg. Ewe lamb, ewe – W Welsh. Ewe hogg – R Ferguson.

Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: D Finlay). Champion – R McTurk, Barlaes, Dalry with a tup hogg, bought at Carlisle for £5000 from Val Edmondson with this being his first outing. Male – R McTurk. Female, tup lamb – A Brown, Macqueston.

Any other breed native (Judge: N Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow). Champion – A Marshall, Eastlands, Crocketford with a Cheviot ewe. Reserve – B and J Landers, Bargaly, with a hill Cheviot tup hogg. Male – B and J Landers. Female – A Marshall. Tup lamb – A Hunter-Blair, Nether Cleuch, Dalry.

Any other breed continental (Judge: N Douglas). Champion and reserve – G Paterson, Moss Nae Beltrex, Twynholm. Champion was a Beltex aged tup, Smart Ass Few and Far Between. This stock tup also sired the the first prize tup lamb, Moss Nae Hotshot. Reserve was a February-born ewe lamb, Moss Nae Hey Good Lookin. She is by Horseclose Epic, whose dam, Moss Nae Daisy Duke was any other breed champion at the same show as a lamb, back in 2018. All classes – Moss Nae Beltex.
