Exhibitors and spectators were out in force to support the new venue for Cumberland Show, staged just outside Carlisle, attracting a record number of sheep entries, with cattle numbers on par to 2019.

Taking the highly contested champions of champions title was the beef winner, a Charolais maiden heifer from Sean Mitchell's six female herd from Skelton, Penrith.

Harestone Rapunzel, which was bought out of Carlisle this year for 6500gns from the Barclay family's draft sale, caught the eye of supreme judge, John Wigham, who runs 150 cows and 1000 sheep.

"I really could not find any faults with her. She is well grown for her age being a well balanced heifer that walks nice and square when being paraded," said Mr Wigham, who selected the beef animal before the heavy horse, dairy, sheep and light horse champions.

This Charolais is by Harestone Nano, out of the Allanfauld Gambler daughter, Harestone Nancy, and is in calf to Bostonia Richie due in December.

Dumfries-shire breeder, Andrew Ewing, landed the reserve beef title with his two-year-old Limousin in-calf heifer, Fairywater Robyn. She is the result of the Keltic Leinstergold sire onto the dam, Fairywater Megan.

It was the Jersey champion that was supreme in the dairy section for Thomas Andrew and Michael Louise Jackson and daughters. Their winner came in the form of the fourth calver, Clifton Chavez Denise. She is now giving 40 litres, is Ex 94-rated and one of the flushing cows in the herd. She is a daughter of Chilli Chavez and out of Clifton Maximus Denise, which is VG86.

Reserve dairy section was the Ayrshire cow, Sandersons Esther 21, from David and Christine Sanderson. This seventh calver last calved in March being Ex94 classified and is now giving 40 litres. She was supreme dairy at Northumberland earlier this month.

Among the sheep, after creating a Blue Texel section on the day due to the demand in entries, it was the champion in this section that went on to take the overall sheep title for Colin Rae, Wallacetown. This home-bred gimmer is bred from a Millside ewe which was purchased privately and sired by a Coura tup, being one of 15 ewes in the flock.

Father and son duo, Robert and Stuart Pigg, Gaitsgill, produced the Texel champion which went on to take the reserve sheep inter-breed title, for their 20-ewe flock. This home-bred gimmer on her first outing is backed by home-bred genetics on both sides.

Heavy horse champion was the Clydesdale filly, Howgillside Lady Patricia, from Jacqueline Marshall and Christine Halliday. Destined for more shows this summer, she is a daughter of Macfin Starlight and out of Howgillside Lady Rose.

Holstein (Judge: W Fleming, Lockerbie). Champion – C Wilson, Evening Hill Farm, with Evening Atwood Jessie 2. This second calver last calved in December and is now giving 50kg, being a daughter of Maple-Downs-I G W Atwood and out of the VG85 dam, Evening Gain Jessie. She is VG88 classified herself. This fourth calver is giving 40 litres and is Ex94 being one of the flushing cows in the herd. She is a daughter of Chilli Chavez and out of Clifton Maximus Denise which is VG86 classified. Reserve – JA Raven and K Scott, with the freshly calved heifer, Layward Divinely Victorious. Calved in April, she is giving 31kg and is a daughter of River Valley Victorious, out of Layward Chrome Divine. Heifer, fourth or later lactation cow – H Jackson. She was paraded with her January born bull calf, Lucyland Tarzan, which is sired by Allacott Herbert. Reserve – S Mitchell with the rising two-year-old female, Hutton Rosie stood reserve junior champion at the Great Yorkshire last year and is set for more summer shows this year. British Blue (Judge: D Saunders, Ulverston). Champion and reserve – R and E Pattinson, with the champion being Topside Prince Philip, January, 2020-born bull by Bringlee Blackstar and out of Topside Millie Mo. Having stood male champion at Northumberland, he is destined for the Royal Highland and Great Yorkshire. Standing reserve was their January, 2021-born heifer, Topside Realun, which is by Naby Gold Dust and out of Topside Isla. Senior bull, heifer – R Pattinson. Junior bull, cow or heifer in calf – D and L Watret.

Commercial beef (Judge: S Powley, Carlisle). Champion – N Slack with the 15-month-old heifer, TikTok. This British Blue cross was bought from Messrs Hayton and Sons, at Kirkby Stephen, in November, and bagged a second prize ticket at the Beef Expo this year. Reserve – A Ewing's Limousin cross heifer, Penny. This yearling previously stood reserve baby beef champion at the Beef Expo being sired by Huntershall Oddessy, she is now destined for the Highland this week. Heifer junior – N Slack. Senior heifer – A Ewing. Steer – R Priestley.

Native breed (Judge: J Rowell, Cumnock). Champion – R Ashworth's 24-month-old Angus bull, Gretnahouse Blacksmith, which was purchased privately in February. He is the result of the sire, Blelack Juke, onto Gretnahouse Blackbird. Reserve – J Steel with the rising two-year-old bull, Kingholm Risotto. This Aberdeen-Angus was bought out of Stirling for 10,000gns and stood reserve at Fife Show. He is a son of Quaker Hill Dead Center, and out of Weeton Rosebud M349. Senior bull – W Ashworth. Junior bull, junior female – J Steel. Senior female – D Irving.

Dexter (Judge: H Bickerton, Middlewich). Champion and reserve – K Darnbrook. The top ticket was awarded to the February, 2020-born heifer, Planetree Felicity. On her first outing, she is by Pampas Bruno and out of Planetree Echidne. Reserve was Planetree Eurus, which was on his first outing and is set for more local shows this summer. This yearling is by Planetree Remus, out of Planetree Iris, and will be offered for sale at the rare breed show and sale at Carlisle, in September. Bull, senior heifer and pairs – K Darnbrook. Reserve – L Smith and J Huddart, Majestic Texels, with a February-born ewe lamb. On her first outing, she is a daughter of the 50,000gns Sportsmans Dare Devil and out of a home-bred ewe. Zwartbles (Judge: I Hartley, Nelson). Champion – C Rae, Wallacetown, with a gimmer. This Eastmiddle sheep was bought from Stuart Craig, being a daughter of Eastmiddle Galileo. Reserve – G Smith, Barmurrie, with the four-year-old ewe, Barmurrie Heather. Backed by home-bred genetics, she is a daughter of Barmurrie Dynamite and out of Barmurrie Chrissie. Jacob (Judge: B Webster, Newburgh). Champion and reserve – Clive Richardson, Border. The top ticket went to the gimmer, Border Dolly.
