Visitors and exhibitors were out in force at last week’s Stranraer Show where the show attracted one of the biggest line-ups of dairy stock to date with no fewer than 100 dairy cattle in attendance on the day.
Taking all the plaudits in the dairy section, including best heifer and overall champion, was the two-year-old Ayrshire heifer, Stevenson’s Bunty, from Messrs Howie and Stevenson, Wellhouse, Kirkcolm. Having only calved down in June and giving 33litres per day, this girl is a daughter of Pinetree Arbour Red and is a descendant of a former Royal Show victor.
In the beef cattle lines, it was a day to remember for the Vance family from Bridgehouse Farm, Whithorn as they lifted the inter-breed title with their two-year-old Limousin cross heifer, Dam She’s Glam. Sired by Homebyres Norham and out of the ex show heifer, Too Glam To Give A Damn, she has already enjoyed success at the Welsh Winter Fair, last year, after placing first in her class.

Across in the sheep lines it was the two-crop Blackface ewe from William Stevenson, Balrazzie, Ballantrae that took home the red, white and blue sash in the inter-breed championship. Having claimed the supreme title at Ayr Show, back in May, she is by a £14,000 Auldhouseburn bought at Dalmally tup sales in 2017 and out of a High Stellar-bred ewe.
Clydesdale champion was the four-year-old home-bred yeld mare, Burgess Outon Miracle, from Colleen Marshall, Newton Stewart. Another Ayr Show victor, she is by Eskechraggan Ernest, bred from Rashiehillhouse Jessica Jean and last year stood reserve at the Great Yorkshire Show, as well as champion at Bute.

Holstein (Judge: G Boreland Jnr, Mauchline). Champion and reserve dairy inter-breed – Cairnpat Holsteins, Cairnpat, Lochans with the four-year-old third calver, Stardale Attwood Roxy. Giving 50litres per day and on her first outing, she is sired by Attwood and out of Shottle Roxy. Reserve – R and M Scott, Shacklehill Farm, Mossblown with four-year-old second calver, Nethervalley Applicable Elegance. Giving 44litres per day and having stood fourth in her class at this year’s Royal Highland Show, she is by Applicable and calved down in November. Heifer calf born on or after Dec 1, 2021 – M Kevan, Low Barness, Wigtown. Heifer born on or after Aug 1, 2021 and before Nov 30, 2021, in-calf heifer to calve at no more than 32-months-old, senior cow in-milk having calved three times or more, cow having produced more than 8000kg of milk in any 305 day lactation, pairs – Cairnpat Holsteins. Jersey (Judge: R Sloan, Auchinleck). Champion – Buchanan Family, Laigh Kilphin, Ballantrae with the senior cow, Tintoview Tequila Blondie. In her fifth lactation and giving 42litres per day, having calved down in May, she is by Tequila and out of Bluegrass Blondie. Reserve – JR McKay and Son, Broughton Mains, Sorbie with the senior cow, Olympic Victorious Bella, which is daughter of River Valley Victorious. Heifer calf born on or after Aug 1, 2021 – JR McKay and Son. Heifer in-milk or in-calf, cow in-milk or in-calf, pairs – Buchanan Family.
Any other dairy breed (Judge: R Sloan). Champion – Buchanan Family, Laigh Kilphin, Ballantrae with the Jersey cross cow, Tintoview Wind Inga. In her fifth lactation, giving 43litres per day and having calved in June, she is by the Holstein bull, Fizor and out of the Jersey cow, Tintoview Celia. This girl also stood champion here three years ago. Reserve – R and S McColm, High Boreland, Lochans with the Brown Swiss maiden heifer, Soulseat Dairy King Dee. This July 2021-born heifer is by Dairy King and out of Soulseat Jackpot Dee which impressively scored maximum 89 points as a second calver and maximum 93 points as a third calver. Galloway (Judge: H Ross, Dumfries). Champion – M McCornick, Barquhill Farm, Wigtown with the two-year-old in-calf heifer, Barquhill Almond. On her first outing she is by Barquhill Barney and out of Klondyke Almond. Reserve – 5. Messrs Wallace, Over Barskeoch with the November-born heifer calf, Fizzy Alice of Barskeoch. A daughter of Orion of Balgray, she is bred from Uptown Alice of Overbarskeoch. Bull calf, heifer calf – Messrs Wallace. Heifer in-milk or in-calf, cow in-milk or in-calf, pairs – M McCornick.
Belted Galloway (Judge: H Ross). Champion – RKG Farms, Irelandton, Twynholm with the 26-month-old in-calf heifer, Auchengassel Sollya, which is sired by Speddoch Unique. Reserve – B and J Landers, Bargaly Farm, Newton Stewart with the two-year-old heifer, Cairnsmore Olivia Hannah . Sired by Tobergill Sam, she is out of Cairnsmore Hannah. Bull calf, pairs – B and J Landers. Heifer calf, heifer stirk – J Taylor, Brae Gadgirth, Sundrum, Ayr. Heifer in-milk or in-calf – RKG Farms.
Native beef (Judge: J Douglas, Stranraer). Champion and reserve beef inter-breed – MR McCornick, Boreland Farm, Kirkcowan with 15-month-old Aberdeen-Angus bull, McCornick Dark Knight. A son of McCornick Kernel V444, he is bred from McCornick Duchess. He will be heading to Dumfries Show. Reserve – B and J Landers with the 17-month-old Beef Shorthorn bull, Cairnsmore Ronaldo. On his first outing he is sired by Coldrochie Jurassic and out of Cairnsmore Lacey Amina. Bull calf born between Aug 1 2020 and Aug 1, 2021– MR McCornick. Heifer stirk, pairs – B and J Landers.
Continental beef (Judge: I Carlisle, Dumfries). Champion and reserve – J Forsyth, Mid Bishopton, Whithorn. Supreme was the five-year-old Limousin cow, Mid Bishopton Nzuri. An AI daughter of Lodge Hamlet, she is out of Mid Bishopton Iron Maiden and is due to calf in October to Tweeddale Lennox. Reserve was the 13-month-old heifer, Mid Bishopton Sienna. A daughter of Tweeddale Lennox, she is out of Mid Bishopton Olivia. Bull calf born on or after Aug 1, 2021, heifer stirk, cow in-milk or in-calf – J Forsyth. Heifer calf – Hamilton Farm, Killumpha, Port Logan. Bull calf – M Kevan, Low Barness, Wigtown.
Commercial cattle (Judge: I Carlisle). Champion, reserve and beef inter-breed – A and E Vance, Bridgehouse Farm, Whithorn. Supreme was the two-year-old Limousin cross heifer, Dam She’s Glam. Sired by Homebyres Norham and out of the ex show heifer, Too Glam To Give A Damn, she has already enjoyed success at the Welsh Winter Fair, last year, after placing first in her class. Reserve was the 17-month-old Limousin cross bullock, The Marvel. By a Limousin bull and out of a Limousin cross cow, this boy stood LiveScot lightweight steer champion and champion at Dumfries Young Farmers calf rally, last year. Heifer calf under one-year-old – J Forsyth. Heifer, steer – A and E Vance.
Blackface (Judge: R Duncan). Champion and sheep inter-breed – W Stevenson, Balrazzie, Ballantrae with the two-crop Blackface ewe. Having claimed the supreme title at Ayr Show, back in May, she is by a £14,000 Auldhouseburn bought at Dalmally tup sales in 2017 and out of a High Stellar-bred ewe. Reserve – Drannandow Farms, Newton Stewart with the shearling tup which is out of a £9000 Dyke bought at Dalmally in 2020. Out of a ewe by an £18,000 Dyke, this boy is heading to Wigtown Show. Aged ram, ewe – W Stevenson. Shearling ram, gimmer, ewe lamb, group of three – Drannandow Farms. Tup lamb – R and K Hannah, High Balyett, Innermessan, Stranraer.
Suffolk (Judge: J Lundy, Annan). Champion – P and A Wilson, Spoutwells Farm, Stranraer with the ewe lamb by Ballynacannon Boiling Point. Out of a Carony-bred ewe purchased as a ewe lamb at Carlisle in 2019, she is another heading to Wigtown. Reserve – JIA Wallace, Claycrop Farm, Kirkinner, Newton Stewart with the January-born ram lamb. An AI son of Burnview Bombay Sapphire, he is out of a Strathbogie Samurai-sired ewe and will be forward for sale at the Carlisle tup sale later this month. Aged ram, gimmer – A Clark, Meikle Glengyre, Leswalt, Stranraer. Ram lamb, ewe – JIA Wallace. Ewe lamb, group of three – P and A Wilson.
Border Leicester (Judge: S Wallace, Ballyclare). Champion – W and T Nelson, High Kilphin, Ballantrae with the gimmer, Kilphin Princess. By Knockglass Johnny B Good and out of Intock Sandy, she was on her first outing. Reserve – JB Barrowman, North Knockglass Farm, Stranraer with the one-crop ewe by Altocane Celebrity and out of Eildon Epic. Aged ram, shearling ram, ewe lamb, group of three – D and I Walker, Laigh Alticane, Pinwherry. Ewe – JB Barrowman. Gimmer – W and T Nelson.
Bluefaced Leicester (Judge: A Warnock, Biggar). Champion – A McQuistin, Barnshangan Farm, New Luce with an AI gimmer by G34 Midlock. Out of a J14 Blarnavaid-sired ewe, this girl has already enjoyed show success having stood champion at the Royal Highland Showcase as a ewe lamb. Reserve – WD Barrowman, Mid Knockglass Farm, Stranraer with the two-crop ewe by a Kirkby Redgate sire. Aged ram, shearling ram – M and C Drummond, Cassington Farm, Maybole. Ram lamb, gimmer, ewe lamb, group of three – A McQuistin. Ewe – WD Barrowman.
Scotch Mule (Judge: A Warnock). Champion – GW Allan, 5 Highfield Place, Ochiltree with a gimmer purchased as a ewe lamb from Messrs Paton, Craig, Straiton. She is by the N4 Macqueston shared with Pinvalley and out of a Craig-bred ewe. She was champion at New Cumnock and Dalrymple shows. Reserve – A McQuistin with a pen of three ewe lamb, two of which are sired by home-bred rams and the third by a Homerton ram. Single ewe lamb, pen of three – A McQuistin. Gimmer – GW Allan.
Any other pure continental (Judge: R Templeton, Wigtown). Champion – M and R McCornick, Barquhill Farm, Wigtown with the aged Dutch Spotted ram, Westbroad Diego. Purchased as a tup lamb at Carlisle in 2020 for 1700gns, this boy stood reserve male champion at the national at the Great Yorkshire Show. Reserve – A Brisbane, Little Tongue Farm, Castle Kennedy with the Blue Texel ram lamb, Auchmantle Gypsy King. A February-born ET son of Matts Escobar, he is out of Hackney Clarissa which was bought in December, 2018. Aged ram, ewe lamb, group of three – M and R McCornick. Ram lamb, gimmer – A Brisbane. Ewe – J Cannon, Redbrae Farm, Wigtown.

Supreme was a North Counrty Cheviot Park-type gimmer which is by Humbleheugh Wullie and out of a Carruthers-bred ewe. Reserve was another Park-type Northie ewe lamb, this time by Overacres Amorus and out of a home-bred ewe. Aged ram, ram lamb – C Adams, Clugston Farm, Kirkcowan. Ewe – L Adams, Clugston Farm, Kirkcowan. Gimmer, ewe lamb – GE McCornick. Group of three – M and C Drummond, Cassington Farm, Maybole.
Texel (Judge: A McColm, Port William). Champion – A and A Grant, High Croach, Cairnryan with the February-born ET ewe lamb, Orlas Flirt. Sired by Fachell Dodgy Dave and out of a Sportsmans A Star-sired ewe, she stood reserve champion at Ayr Show. Reserve – B and R Westby, Craigenquarroch Farmhouse, Stranraer with a February-born ram lamb. A son of Sportsmans Dare Devil which was purchased for 48,000gns at Lanark in 2020, he is out of a Brackenridge Crown Royal-sired ewe. Aged ram – J Maxwell, Barledziew Cottage, Sorbie. Shearling ram – A Clark and Son, Meikle Glengyre, Leswalt. Ram lamb – B and R Westby. Ewe, gimmer – A Campbell, Dinnans, Whithorn. Ewe lamb, group of three – A and A Grant.
Beltex (Judge: A Morton, Denny). Champion and reserve inter-breed sheep – W McMillan, Garheugh Farm, Portwilliam with the two-crop ewe, Carse Eyecatcher. This ET daughter of Woodwick Chino is out of a Hackney Braveheart-sired ewe and is heading to Wigtown Show. Reserve – R McKnight, Cooriedoon, Glenluce with the gimmer, McKnights Ginger. Sired by Smart Ass Dark Horse, she is out of Cairney Bethany and is on her first outing. Aged ram, ram lamb – R Campbell, Carsewalloch Farm, Creetown. Ewe, ewe lamb – W McMillan. Gimmer – R McKnight. Zwartble (Judge: N Henderson, Stirling). Champion – R Torbet, Whitecrook, Dunragit with the January-born ewe lamb, Lucebay Katie. Sired by Greystone Grouse, she is out of Lucebay Hetty. Reserve – C and H Duffy, The Smiddy Bungalow, Dunragit with the home-bred gimmer, Smiddyhill Jasmine. On her first outing she is by Smiddyhill Fergus and out of a home-bred ewe.
