Visitors and exhibitors were out in force at last week’s Stranraer Show where the show attracted one of the biggest line-ups of dairy stock to date with no fewer than 100 dairy cattle in attendance on the day.

Taking all the plaudits in the dairy section, including best heifer and overall champion, was the two-year-old Ayrshire heifer, Stevenson’s Bunty, from Messrs Howie and Stevenson, Wellhouse, Kirkcolm. Having only calved down in June and giving 33litres per day, this girl is a daughter of Pinetree Arbour Red and is a descendant of a former Royal Show victor.

In the beef cattle lines, it was a day to remember for the Vance family from Bridgehouse Farm, Whithorn as they lifted the inter-breed title with their two-year-old Limousin cross heifer, Dam She’s Glam. Sired by Homebyres Norham and out of the ex show heifer, Too Glam To Give A Damn, she has already enjoyed success at the Welsh Winter Fair, last year, after placing first in her class.

Across in the sheep lines it was the two-crop Blackface ewe from William Stevenson, Balrazzie, Ballantrae that took home the red, white and blue sash in the inter-breed championship. Having claimed the supreme title at Ayr Show, back in May, she is by a £14,000 Auldhouseburn bought at Dalmally tup sales in 2017 and out of a High Stellar-bred ewe.

Clydesdale champion was the four-year-old home-bred yeld mare, Burgess Outon Miracle, from Colleen Marshall, Newton Stewart. Another Ayr Show victor, she is by Eskechraggan Ernest, bred from Rashiehillhouse Jessica Jean and last year stood reserve at the Great Yorkshire Show, as well as champion at Bute.

This girl also stood champion here three years ago. Reserve – R and S McColm, High Boreland, Lochans with the Brown Swiss maiden heifer, Soulseat Dairy King Dee. This July 2021-born heifer is by Dairy King and out of Soulseat Jackpot Dee which impressively scored maximum 89 points as a second calver and maximum 93 points as a third calver.
