TURRIFF Show had everything this year – it had fantastic show weather, some superb livestock, a sprinkling of politics and to top it all, a Royal visit put the icing on the cake.

HRH Princes Royal certainly made a huge impression during a show visit that took in most of the North-east's leading agricultural event, including presenting the champion of champions prize and taking a particular interest in meeting with Highland cattle breeders who had their 'National' show there. She also visited various trade stands and, as always, impressed everyone with her working knowledge of the industry.

Getting the show's top accolade from her was the winner of the beef title, a superb three-year-old Aberdeen Angus heifer that was paraded with a calf at foot by Neil and Mark Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford. Their Tonley Lady Heather has been scoring some great success this summer, including taking the top award at the breed's National show in Norfolk, being head of the line at the Great Yorkshire and reserve supreme at the Royal Highland.

She's by Blelack Evermore, a sire that had originally been sold to Ireland for 19,000gns, but which had been bought back to Aberdeenshire by the Watties for his stature and depth of pedigree. Her working credentials were supported by a heifer calf at foot by the 12,000gns Duncanziemere Jet Stream, which had also been the top calf at the National.

Lady Heather also teamed up with herd mate and reserve breed champion, Tonley King Paco – a yearling son of Tonley Jester Eric – to win the inter-breed pairs title. He'll be sold at Stirling in October.

For the champion of champions title, Mrs Helen Goldie, from Harpercroft, in Ayrshire, had chosen her just ahead of the top Highland pony shown by Robin Stewart, Stablesbrae, Durris, Banchory. this was West lodge McNair, a three-year-old stallion by Glenmazeran na Dailach.

From the beef champions, the runner-up was the Charolais champion from Neil and Stuart Barclay, from Harestone, Crathes. This was the six-year-old in-calf cow, Harestone Mamma Mia, a Maerdy Dublin daughter dues in September to Harestone Rabalius. She's another proven winner, having been reserve female at the Highland in 2019 and female champion at the Great Yorkshire last year.

She was also part of the Barclays reserve pairing and inter-breed group of three winning team.

From the sheep section – which, like the cattle had experienced a drop in entries from pre-Covid levels – the tri-colour sash went the way of a cracking Charollais gimmer from Willie and Carole Ingram, Logie Durno, Pitcaple, Inverurie – but shown by sons Gregor and Bruce and daughter, Amy.

Again packed with breeding talent, this daughter of the 5800gns Dalby Tualagi is out of a dam by the reserve champion, the well-known and shown ram, the 16,000gns Foxhill Va Va Voom, and she has already produced sons to 9500gns. The winner teamed up with her grand-sire, which is now a two-shear, to win the inter-breed pairs.

The catalogue for the Highland cattle 'National' event looked well-filled but only half of the entries were forward on the day for Jim McKechnie, Gartocharn, to place. He was slightly disappointed with the numbers, but not so with the quality. His choice for the top was the big show-winning two-year-old heifer, Bryor Rose of Rannoch, a daughter of Seamus of Craycombe shown by veteran breeder, Donald MacNaughton, from Kelty, in Fife.

His son, Bryon, was also in the hunt for the title, settling for reserve with the second-placed two-year-old heifer, Alice 22 of Tordarroch, which he was showing for John Cooper, Tordarroch Estate, Farr, Inverness. This daughter of Macrae Charles of Maol has also been doing well on the show circuit, winning at Sutherland and Nairn, where she was also reserve inter-breed champion.
