Stars of the Future returned to United Auctions’ Stirling Agricultural Centre last weekend with a cracking entry of 400 pedigree and commercial beef calves across 10 breed sections.

The event, which aims to showcase the next generation of top-quality stock, was again well attended with the young handlers competing on the Friday evening and the main calf show on the Saturday.

Taking the continental championship in the senior classes was Annick Lucia’s Nicosia from Reece and Andrew Simmers, Backmuir, Keith. This September 2022-born Simmental heifer is by Kilbride Farm Karl and out of former Highland show champion, Annick Ginger’s Lucia.

Judge Teresa Wilson was most impressed by all the senior winners and added: “There were excellent champions in all the breeds but the inter-breed seniors were particularly close. It was the way the Simmental heifer walked that sold it for me.”

Reserve senior was the Charolais heifer Falleninch Teziana from Andrew Hornall, Falleninch, Stirling. His July 2022-born entry is by French sire Falleninch Memo and out of previous Stars’ champion, Falleninch Lottie.

A Charolais also topped the junior continentals when Newlogie Unique, a seven-month-old bull, scooped the main honours for AJR Farms, Milton of Collieston, Ellon. The youngster, shown by herd manager Andrew Reid’s son, Andrew (18), is an ET bred from Newlogie Papillon and sired by Maerdy Morwr. Ms Wilson added: “He is a real beauty of a calf and I very much look forward to seeing what he achieves in his future.”

Taking reserve was Solway View Tamsin, a British Blue heifer from Kevin Watret, Maulcastle Farm, Annan. This April 2023 calf is an AI daughter of Boherard Overdose and the first flush from Solway View Peach.

For the native senior champion, it was Chloe Dunlop’s Beef Shorthorn bull, Stallashaw Senate, that stood supreme. This yearling son of Stallashaw President is out of Hyndford Nina. He was followed closely by a Highland bull from first-time exhibitors Kirsty Neil and Andrew Polson, Carnoustie, which landed the reserve section award. Their Inness Glenfinnan is a 2022-born AI son of Alasdair 4 Woodneuk, out of Lorna Craigluscar.

Taking the junior title was Foxhill Diamond Mist Z253, an 11-month-old Aberdeen Angus heifer from Mike and Melanie Alford, Foxhill Farm, Devon. Their youngster is by Linton Gilbertines President S021 and bred from Weeton Diamond Mist M351.

Pipped to the post was Harveybros 1 Crocus Aurora from Sophie and George Harvey, Balfron. This nine-month-old Hereford heifer is an AI daughter of Sky High 1 Take-a-Chance, out of Harveybros 1 Crocus Tiara.

Closing the show was the coveted Joe Watson Memorial trophy for the best pair of calves which was presented to Charolais by Andrew Hornall. This comprised his 2022-born heifers Falleninch Tiziana and Falleninch Tenetia, both by Falleninch Memo. Judged between continental and native judges Teresa Wilson and Andy Frazier, the Charolais pipped the native pairs champion from Wellbeck’s Natalie Hynd, Ayrshire to the post. Her pair of 2023-born Beef Shorthorns, Westbroad Trident and Westbroad Bramble Tina, took reserve with the latter also winning the reserve junior female champion in the Beef Shorthorn section. Judge Andy Frazier commented: “The pair had a fantastic spark about them, just great looking breeding heifers.”
