Scottish breeders starred in the top awards at the Young Breeders’ Weekend Rally staged in Cumbria, winning several of the lead trophies.
Outwith the competition aspect of the weekend, competitors were able to take part in practical workshops while also enhancing the knowledge and understanding of cattle breeding and management.
On the Friday, HYB members arrived at Shap Wells Hotel, for an ‘opening ceremony’ of games inspired by the Olympics, before partying the night away. A highlight of the Rally was seeing which club had been the most creative with their fancy dress.
On the Saturday, young breeders competed in the National Reasoned Stock Judging and Linear Assessment competitions at the home of Wormanby Holsteins, by kind permission of the Hodgson family.
Another feature of the weekend was the ‘Field-2-Foto’ competition at Borderway Auction Mart on Sunday, whereby teams of five were assigned a calf which had been halter broken and was essentially clean.
Teams put their best clipper forward, whose score not only counts towards the team total, but also puts them in the running to win the National Clipping competition. Two members then wash the calf before the rest of the team participates in the final preparation, and one member participates in the showmanship portion of the competition. The team then collaborates to photograph the calf as a finale.
