Quality as opposed to quantity was at the forefront of the Lanarkshire Summer Holstein Herds competition judged by Callum Bryson of the Whiteflat herd from Catrine.
Brothers David and John Brewster’s Boclair herd from Lennoxtown, Glasgow, took three of the top awards taking the silverware for the best group of five heifers and the team of 10 cows. Their 10 included cows sired by Radiant, Crushtime, Unix, Delta, Rapid, Hanito, and Lambda, while their heifer group was made up of Lambda and Delta daughters.
The duo also won the trophy for the individual heifer and best heifer mammary with Boclair Lambda Lilyan 2. A daughter of Farnear Delta-Lambda, she is out of Boclair Bandares Lilyan.
Best individual cow, mammary and bred by exhibitor was Grangehall Pepper Whiterose from Andrew and Euan Lawrie, Lanark. No stranger to the Herds Competition after winning Best Individual Cow and Overall Mammary at the Club’s Fab Five earlier in the year, she was fresh from her champion of champion win at Carnwath Show. A daughter of Delaberge Pepper, she is out of Grangehall Ponder Whiterose.
Leading the 50-tonne production class was Dalserf Skoda Irena, from JD Baillie and family, Crumhaugh. Classified Ex93, she is by Pine-Tree Altaskoda and out Dalserf Irena 143.
Six herds competed this year with stock on show from: Messrs Baillie, Dalserf; Messrs Boyd, Letterickhills; Messrs Brewster, Boclair; Messrs Laird, Cauldcoats; Messrs Lawrie, Grangehall; and Messrs Weatherup, Parkend/Lesmay
