Dairy farmers, Arthur and Susan Lawrie and sons James and David, Cuthill Towers had due course to celebrate when they took the supreme overall at their local Kinross show with a home-bred Ayrshire.
The family, who run 275 Ayrshire and red and white cows just outside Milnathort, won the champion of champions after show president Scott Black, Mawmill, had to be brought in as umpire to select a winner, when the various inter-breed judges point system resulted in a tie between two of the top three.
“The dairy cow stood out to me as a being a great cow when my background is dairy and Clydesdales,” said Mr Black.
Dairy judge, Katie Davidson, Castle Douglas, was also most impressed by her section winner. “She’s such a stylish Ayrshire and for a fourth calver, she is very angular and has a great well-attached udder.”
Taking all the plaudits was the fourth calver, Cuthill Towers Aladdin Rae 4. Classified Ex92, she is sired by Aladdin-Red and gave 17,000litres in her third 305-day lactation. Calved in March, she is still giving 60litres per day.
There was even more rivalry for the reserve when partners Wilson Peters and Kim Stretch again came head to head with their inter-breed beef and sheep winners.
The couple from Cuilt Farmhouse, Monzie, Crieff, are both fiercely independent when showing their own stock but in the end, Mr Black gave the reserve to Mr Peters’ 23-month-old home-bred show heifer, CC Cindy, a 23-month-old Limousin cross heifer with Ms Stretch’s supreme sheep, Eve, a pedigree Texel ewe coming a close honourary reserve.
CC Cindy already boasts a kist load of championships, taking the supreme overall at Alyth and Dunblane Shows; inter-breed beef champion at Braco; reserve inter-breed beef at Perth, Angus and West Fife and section champion at Fife Show.
Eve, a one-crop ewe, is also another well known champion winner from 2022 and 2023 and this year was racking up her fifth championship of the season having lifted the tri-colour at Angus, Alyth, Kirriemuir and Perth.
Supreme horse was the Clydesdale champion, Shielhill Platinum Queen, a two-year-old filly from Robert Sibbald, Thorn Farm, Dollar. Another seasoned champion, she was breed leader at Drymen, West Fife, Stirling and reserve at Braco and Dunblane.
Inter-breed beef judge, Alan Lambie, found his reserve in the Limousin, Beath Tianna from Beth Thomson, Hilton of Beath, Kelty. She was supreme beef champion at Fife and section champion at West Fife.
Taking the equivalent in the sheep lines judged by Jimmy Taylor, was a pen of three prime lambs from George Whyte and son Struan, Lintibbert. These Beltex crosses were also Young Farmers champion winners at Perth Show.
Bumper entries were also forward for the National Ryeland Show of white and coloured sheep which saw a gimmer from Susan Bryden and a ewe lamb from Kim Harding, take the lead awards respectively.
