Just over 200 dairy cattle were entered for the March Borderway Dairy Day sale at Carlisle, where prices peaked at £2550 for a second lactation cow and 117 milking heifers averaged £1787.

Sale leader was Robert Byers’ second calver, Esk Shilling Violet from Canonbie which formed part of the Esk dispersal and the fourth such sale from the Holstein Friesian herd. She is sired by DG Shilling, bred from a Jeeves dam and sold to Messrs Coulthard and Son, Longtown.

Heifers peaked at £2350 for Nydie Altasim Joan was consigned by the Wilson family from Clackmae Farm in Berwickshire. She is sired by Progenesis Altasim, with her dam being high production cow with all lactations in excess of 11,000kg. The buyers were Messrs Paxton, Ardwell, Stranraer.

Just behind, on £2300, the Wreaywood herd from Woodside, Carlisle sold the milking heifer, Irthingend Vader Lily, a Bomaz Vader daughter giving 43kg to Messrs Chester, Embleton, Cockermouth.

The Cowhill Trust sold 21 pedigree Jerseys from their prize winning Kerricks herd in Dumfries to a top of £2200 to average £1831.

Leading this section was Kerrick Video Cara, sired by Video and bred from a Keystone dam that gave over 8000kgs at 6%BF and 4%P in her second lactation. She was knocked down to Messrs Hutton, Ayr.

Also making £2200 was the fresh second calved black and white, Romanway Silver Present, from Turnbull Farming, Plumpton, Penrith, purchased by Messrs Chester, Cockermouth.

British Friesians were topped at £1850 twice. The first was from the Shanks family’s Queenscairn herd from near Kelso. Queenscairn Jingle Chris and the second was a second laction cow from the Neill family from Thornington Farm in Northumberland.

The Coppside herd owned by the Jackson’s from Guillyhill Farm, Dumfries sold 10 in-calf heifers to a top of £1600 for Coppside Amelia. She was bred from an Ex91 pointed dam and sold due to the Angus bull in April.

The fourth sale to disperse the ESK pedigree Holstein Friesian herd owned by Robert Byers from Canonbie included 10 bulling heifers that topped at £1200 on three occasions to average £1111.
