Bulls and heifers both sold to 5200gns at the Hereford Cattle Society's autumn show and sale at Hereford, where a growing demand for the breed also produced a record average of £3622.50 for show heifers.

Overall female champion and leading the heifer trade at 5200gns was the 18-month-old, Rempstone 1 Fashion E438, from M Ludgate, Thame, Oxfordshire, purchased by new breeder RJ Windsor, Sound Villa Herefords, Nantwich, Cheshire. A daughter of Aldersley 1 Edgar, she is out of Kinglee 1 Fashion 304.

Northern Ireland breeders, J and W McMordie, Co Down, had a great day with sales at 4000gns, 3800gns and 3600gns for served heifers by the Scottish sire, Panmure 1 Henry. Their dearest, Solpoll 1 Stardust N5, a two-year-old was purchased by G Hall, Pinmoor Herefords, Lancashire.

The McMordies also picked up the reserve female championship with Solpoll 1 Starlet N26, which made 3600gns selling to Speirs Farms Ltd, Pepperstock Herefords, Luton, Bedfordshire, who also bought their 3600gns entry, Solpoll 1 Startlet N28.

Solpoll was in the money amongst the bulls too, selling the second top priced lot at 4200gns to J Riley, Blakesley Herefords, Towcester, Northamptonshire. This was paid for the 18-month-old Solpoll 1 Nashville, also by Panmure 1 Henry.

On the debit side, Solpoll went to 3600gns for the rising two-year-old Greenyards 1 Norrie, a Fisher 1 Keystone son, from PJ and AC Allman, Sutton St Nicholas, Herefordshire.

Matching the 5200gns sale was the lead priced bull from MJ and HM Timmis, Baschurch, Shropshire. Shraden 1 Navas, a 17-month-old was knocked down to James Hazard of Scawfell Genetics based in Seascale, Cumbria, who aims to take semen from the bull to export to a number of countries. His purchase is by Baldinnie 1 Victory and out of Shraden 1 Alice E283.

Flying the flag for Scotland, Arbroath breeders, JM Cant and Partners, took 3400gns for the heifer Panmure 1 Plum N3, from S Coates, Parkapella Herefords, Monmouthshire, and 3500gns for their 17-month-old bull, Panmure 1 Nelson from GT Pope and Sons, Shropshire.

Harvey Brothers, Balfron, Glasgow, sold their two-year-old bull, Harveybros 1 Nigel for 3600gns to D England, Lisvane, Cardiff.
