The first sale to disperse the Mair family's Deveronside pedigree Holstein herd from Kinnermit, Turriff, met a buoyant trade with no fewer than 51 lots selling at £2000 and above.

The sale, which was staged after the Border and Lakeland club event, at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, saw trade peak at 4000gns for Deveronside Mopan Olga, a fresh heifer by the Mogul son, Mopan, purchased by TS Thomson, Kirkton Farm, Cowdenbeath, Fife. Bred from five generations of VG or Ex classified cows, she is out of a home-bred cow by Picston Shottle whose first three lactations were well in excess of 10,000litres.

Shottle was also behind the dam of the second top priced lot at 3000gns when Deveronside Altameteor Tammy GP82, sold to local producers, EM and E Pattinson and Son, Walby Hall, Crosby On Eden. This fresh second calver which gave 10,400litres in her first sold served to Kerndtway Kingpin. She is a grand-daughter of the Ex90-2E Deveronside Stormatic Tammy.

The Deveronside herd which was formed in 1942 and is now managed by Barclay and Lucy Mair, also took 2600gns for Deveronside Microlite Brandy, a freshly calved heifer by Denmire Microlite out of the Ex93-3 Deveronside Twist Brandy. She traces back to Ells Tab Brandy from Western Canada and sold to James McNeil, Cairnpat, Lochans, Stranraer.

Heading down to Lancs, to Bradleys Farms, Park Farm, Preesall, Poulton-Le-Fylde, at 2550gns was Deveronside Dempsey Rox 2, bred from 11 generations of VG or Ex classified cows. She calved her second in September, is by Lirr Drew Dempsey and a grand-daughter of the Ex90-2E Deveronside Outside Roxy.

Just behind, on 2500gns, Hewson Bros, Jerriestown, Blackford, Carlisle, bought Deveronside Glauco Alpina, a fresh heifer by Toc-Farm Duplex Glauco.

Meanwhile, the Monthly Dairy Day sale incorporating the Border and Lakeland show, saw the champion heifer – selected by the judge, Andrew Wilson, Carskerdo, Fife – sell for the top price of 2600gns.

This was Alan Cannon's Espland Mincio Shirley, from Espland Hill, Appleby. A daughter of Mincio, bred from an Excellent dam by Jordan boasting a lifetime yield of 60t, she sold to J and J Kinloch Walton Farm, Dumbarton.

Holstein UK Premier pedigree herd of the year, David and John Brewster's Boclair herd from Bearsden, Glasgow, sold the next two highest priced heifers at 2450gns and 2400gns with their five averaging in excess of £2200. Their dearest, Boclair Lincoln Vision 2, by Woodcatt Lincoln and out of a VG86 Goldwyn dam, changed hands giving 39litres to J Lyle and Co, Nether Pratis, Fife.

Travelling home on the same lorry load to Nether Pratis at 2400gns was the similarly aged Boclair Senator Elegance 3, by Boclair Senator.

Flekvieh bulls met a flying trade selling at 2500gns twice, 2400gns and 2300gns. The bulls which were consigned by SQ Fleckview Genetics, Dungannon, Co Tyrone, Northern Ireland, ranged from 16-18months of age, and saw the first, Ventil AT make 2500gns selling to RJ Nicholson, Green Lane End, Lupton, Carnforth. He is by Vesuv AT and bred from a cow that produced 6021 litres at 4.6%BF and 3.81%P in her first.

Also heading down to Lancashire for the same money was Rawit AT, purchased by S and E Wilkinson, Crossgills Farm, Hurst Green, Clitheroe. This Raldi De son is out of Olivia DE which gave 10,804litres in her third at 4.27%BF and 3.61%P.

Held At, by Herzschlag AT, then made 2400gns selling to AJ Knowles, Higher Park Head, Woodplumpton, Preston. He is bred from a cow that produced 10,185litres in her second at 3.96%BF and 3.47%P.
