A bumper entry of 216 clean cattle and 102 prime bulls made for a cracking Christmas Show and sale at Harrison and Hetherington’s Borderway Mart, on Monday, where prices peaked at £4002 for the overall champion, a Limousin cross heifer.

The 667kg home-bred entry from Messrs Blake, Halfway Well, Penrith, sold at £6.00 per kg to local butchers, R and JP Mullholand, Great Orton, Carlisle.

Eight bulls sold for £2500 or more and to a top of £2706.94 for an 869kg British Blue cross from Messrs Hunter, Upper Brydekirk, Annan, purchased by Bowland Foods. Limousin bulls reached £2658.61 for 862kg entry from Messrs Nimmo, Bogside, Wishaw selling to Mutch Meats. Messrs Nimmo’s four bulls which averaged 862.75kg cashed in at £2629.20.

The Christmas show of lambs saw more than 50 pens forward for the judge, Andrew Mutch, Mutch Meats, Oxfordshire, who found his winners in a pen of four Dutch Texels from Messrs Story, Woodhead, Haltwhistle. They weighing in at 51kg per head and went on to top the sale at £500 per head of 980p per kg, selling to the judge.

Standing in reserve was a pen of four Texels from Mark Batty and Zoe Hall, Pirntaton Farm, which sold at £220 to Steven Wilson’s Butchers for his Corby Hill and Brampton shops.

The first prize single again from Messrs Story, Woodhead, made £180 to Bowland Foods.

Out with the show, another 3110 lambs sold to an average 280p or £126.66 with an SQQ of 284p.
