Averages: 20 females – £735.00 (+£326.05 for four more sold).

AVERAGES almost doubled at the Border Leicester Society's annual female show and sale at Carlisle, on Monday, where the champion topped the trade at 2100gns.

Star attraction here was the last entry from father and son team, Sandy and Alex Watson, Culticheldoch, Muthill, Crieff, purchased by Dumfriesshire breeders, J and E Pattinson, Bonshawside, Kirtlebridge, Lockerbie. A daughter of Didcot Drambuie, a tup which stood champion at the Highland Show in 2013, bred from a ewe by Alticane Atom, she sold for 2100gns carrying triplets to Eildon Rob Roy – the champion at the Kelso Ram Sales in 2015 and breed winner at last year's Highland Show.

The same buyers also went to 1200gns for the third prize gimmer, also from the Watsons. Backed by the exact same genetics, she changed hands carrying a pair to Rob Roy. The Watsons enjoyed a flying trade with their four gimmers averaging £1312.50.

Mary Laidlaw, Kennel Mount, Galston, also came up with the goods, producing the reserve champion at the pre-sale show which went on to sell for the second top price of 1400gns. This ewe hogg, by Kilphin Kiplins and out of a ewe by Hill Sprinter, was knocked down to Messrs Park and Baird, Cherry Orchard, Tetbury, Gloucs.

Next highest disclosed price was 850gns paid for the second prize ewe hogg, this time from John Barrowman, North Knockglass, Stranraer. The breeding behind this transaction includes Eildon Epic, onto a Holburn Limited Edition-sired ewe. She goes home to Inner Gellie House, Anstruther, Fife, having been purchased by Chelgrove Ltd.
