HARRISON and Hetherington held an anniversary show and sale of prime cattle and sheep on Monday, which attracted a quality show of 470 cast cows, stock bulls and prime cattle, as well as 1605 prime and cast sheep.

The pre-sale show of prime cattle was judged by Evan Hall, who awarded the champion ticket to a 631kg British heifer by Tweeddale Ironman, from Messrs Barker and Johnstone, Middle Bank, which later sold for 248.5p per kg or £1568 to Pioneer Foods, Carlisle. Reserve went to Messrs Anderson's 648kg British Blue bullock from Crosby House, Maryport, which made 233.5p or £1513 also to Pioneer Foods.

Outwith the show, bullocks topped the trade at £1714 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Studholme, Nealhouse, Carlisle, while heifers peaked at £1659 for a British Blue from Newbiggin, and 256.5p for a Limousin from Bloan.

A larger show of 341 cast cows saw all classes dearer on the week as the first prize cow, a British Blue weighing 835kg from Gary Bell, Haas Grove, sold for the top price of 188.5kg or £1573 to Sean McGimpsey. Leading the pence per kilo trade at 201.5p was a Limousin cross from W and W Faulder, Houghton House, Houghton, when sold to MCC Livestock, Ireland.

Black and white cows were in strong demand and topped at £1124 and 129.5p for a 868kg Holstein Friesian from Messrs Jackson, Skelton Wood End, to Pickstocks Ltd.

The 87 prime bulls reached £1631.14 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Jardine, The Yett, Lockerbie, while a similar bred bull from Messrs Little, Greenhill, made 232.5p.

In the sheep, Martin MacIntyre of MacIntyre Meats at Hawes, awarded the tri-colour rosette to a pen of 46kg Dutch Texel lambs from Messrs Wigham, Hargill House, which later sold for the top price of £110 per life to Robert Skelton. The same home scooped the reserve honours with a pen of Beltex which sold for £100 to Andrew Dawson.

Outwith the show lambs, a pen of ten from Messrs Hill, Clea Hall, made £103.80 to Michael Lomax.
