IT was the champion animal that went on to sell for the top price of £1800 at Harrison and Hetherington's anniversary show and sale held at Borderway Mart, last week, where a catalogued entry of 756 store cattle were forward.

Tapped out by judge, Robert Kealey from Goole, was A Bunting and Son's British Blue cross heifer from Midtown Farm, New Abbey, which later topped the trade at £1800 when sold to G Park, Carlisle.

Reserve in the pre-sale show was the first prize Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Pearson, The Faulds, Caldbeck, which made £1320 to A Taylor, Lanark.

Outwith the show, the sale witnessed one of the best trades seen in the north of England for some time, as bullocks levelled at £1104.24 and heifers cashed in at £1010.74 with an overall sale average of £1043.42.

While the champion animal led the heifer trade, top price amongst the bullocks was £1390 for a Charolais from Broom Hill.

A smaller show of weaned calves sold on the same day peaked at £1500 for a Limousin bull from J and E Pattinson, Bonshawside, Lockerbie, while 228 young calves sold to £540 for a Charolais bull calf from Messrs Dale, Airds of Balcary, Castle Douglas.
