CHAROLAIS breeders enjoyed a flying trade on the final day of Stirling Bull Sales, having not only scooped the top price of the week at 40,000gns but also securing 12 five-figure sales, a further eight selling at 8000gns or more and a cracking average up more than £700 on the year.
The breed also sold the highest number of bulls and secured the lead average of all the breeds forward, with 80 bulls cashing in at £6785.63, which represents a massive increase of £706 on the same sale last year, for five less sold, and with an 81% clearance.
Not surprisingly, the British Charolais Cattle Society’s chief executive, Peter Phythian, said he was delighted with the day’s trade and he was quick to point out the reasons why it was so good. “Beef producers see a real premium paid in the store ring for fast growing Charolais-sired calves that give a quicker return, and finishers can get the weight up quicker than any other with the Charolais.
“It’s encouraging to see that commercial buyers are prepared to pay good money for good bulls, especially considering issues with beef prices and the drought during the summer.
“The top-end of bulls sold to pedigree breeders but there was a strong commercial trade and many of those commercial buyers were from Aberdeenshire,” added Mr Phythian.
Leading the week’s trade at 40,000gns was one of the last Charolais bulls through the ring, a second prize winner from Esmor Evans’ 160-cow Maerdy herd, from Monfa, Mold. This was Maerdy Newman, a 16-month-old son of Blelack Fabulous – a bull purchased for 10,000gns after standing reserve senior champion here and which first two calves sold for 28,000gns and 22,000gns.
The first calf bred from the Maerdy Dynamite-sired heifer, Maerdy Junco, this popular youngster sold in a two-way split to Charlie Boden and family of Josh, Rosie and Tom, who run the 80-cow Sportsmans herd near Mellor, Stockport, and Neil and Stuart Barclay, of the 70-cow Harestone herd at Crathes, Banchory. Mr Boden praised Newman for his ‘style, presence and correctness.’
Mr Evans also received 8500gns twice for two other sons of Blelack Fabulous including Maerdy Ned which sold to Bill and Murdoch Duncan, East Lediken, Insch, Aberdeenshire. This 17-month-old is out of a heifer named Maerdy Juice which is by Balthayock Eagle.

The other to make the same money was Maerdy Newel, a June 2017-born bull bred out of Maerdy Honney, an AI daughter of Froufrours. He sold up to Orkney with T Leslie, Quoymorhouse, Shapinsay. In all, the five Maerdy bulls cashed in at £13,860.

Archie and John MacGregor’s Allanfauld Neptune, from their 25-strong cow herd at Kilsyth, Glasgow, surpassed their previous best of 17,000gns and made the second top of 20,000gns to relatively new breeder, Richard McCulloch, Overhill House, Armadale, West Lothian. He will use Neptune on his small pedigree Charolais herd, as well as his 90 commercials which runs alongside 90 pedigree Simmentals.

Third prize in the strongest class, this 16-month-old is by Balmyle Jasper – a bull the MacGregors bought at Carlisle in 2015 for 11,000gns when he stood reserve junior champion but has since been sold back to Balmyle. Bred out of the Woodpark Elgin-sired, Allanfauld Heiress, she is a maternal sister to the 10,000gns Allanfauld Napoleon sold at Carlisle and bred the herd’s current stock bull, Allanfauld Lachie.
The overall champion and fourth bull through the ring, Anside Nightrider, from the Irvine family at Braehead, Drummuir, Keith, kicked the sale off with an 18,000-price tag when sold down to Yorkshire with Billy Turner, Brampton Hall, Skelton-on-Ure, for his Brampton herd. Brought out by son Darren, this January, 2017-born son of Woodpark Elgin, is out of the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger-sired dam, Anside Geisha – a cow which full brother, Anside Excalibur, sold for 26,000gns at Carlisle. Reserve inter-breed beef champion at Nairn Show, he is the last Charolais bull to be sold from the Irvines.

Bulls from Bill Bruce’s Balmyle herd, from Meigle, Perthshire, were also in the money, selling at 15,000gns, 14,000gns and 10,000gns.
The dearest, Balmyle Nucleus, brought out by stockman Dane Ivison, was a second prize intermediate by Maerdy Gouverneur – an imported bull from France which has bred sons to 12,000gns in February. Bred from one of the best cows in the 55-strong cow herd – the Maerdy Egret-sired, Balmyle Heyday – he heads home with Ian and Jean Smith for commercial use at Netherton, Whitehouse, Alford.
Mr Bruce received 14,000gns for Balmyle Navarone, a May 2017-born bull by the same sire, which stood first in his class. Out of Balmyle Garland, a dam by the former Highland Show champion, Balmyle Eclipse, the buyer here was John Jeffrey of the Kersknowe herd at Kelso.
Last to hit the five-figure bracket for the Balmyle team was the 19-month-old Balmyle Napier, this time a son of the 9500gns Maerdy Egret which first three sons sold to average 14,000gns. The dam, Balmyle Glucose, is by the 12,000gns Pennal Dazzller, which is a son of Dingle Hofmeister. Second in his class the previous day, he made 10,000gns to the Hepburns, at Northouse, Hawick.

Andrew Warnock, Dreva Farm, Broughton, Biggar, forked out the cash for this topper.

Despite bidding reaching 14,000gns, the junior champion and reserve overall bull from Jonathon Crawford, Maghera, Co Londonderry, was unsold in the sale ring but later sold out the back for 12,000gns to the Stout family, from Whitehall, Stronsay, Orkney.
This was Coolnaslee Nolan, an ET-bred, May 2017-born bull by the 50,000gns Balthayock Justice, which stood reserve supreme champion here. Bred out of the Sportsmans Columbo-sired, Coolnaslee Gillian, he was male champion at this year’s Balmoral Show.

Three others came under the hammer at 10,000gns, including the Milne family’s 19-month-old Elgin Neuer from their herd at Kennieshillock, Lhanbryde, Elgin. Another son of Woodpark Elgin, this first prize winner is bred from Elgin Ultra and is a half brother to the 20,000gns Elgin Davinci.
