The overall champion led the way at Carlisle for the autumn show and sale of 40 Charolais cattle, comprising of 22 bulls, 18 females and six lots of embryos.

The winning ticket came from Jan Boomaars, Heathdown, The Ridge, Woldingham, Surrey, England, for Vexour Otto, which left the ring after a 5500gns bid from G McClanachan and Sons, Torthorwald, Dumfries. The 19-month-old bull is a son of Woodpark Longbow and out of Vexour Fairlady, which goes back to Vexour Vixen.

Vexour Owen from the same home stood second in his class before heading home to Moffat with JD Quigley and Sons, Beattock, for 3000gns.

Balmyle Ovation made his mark for Bill Bruce, Balmyle, Meigle, Perthshire, when he stood third in his class and went on to sell for 4200gns to T Walker and Son, Blyth Bridge, West Linton, Peebles-shire. This April, 2018-born bull is F94L Myostatin and is a son of Ovill Lennon and out of Balmyle Jade, which goes back to Balmyle Glucose.

Leading the female trade was the female champion and the reserve overall, Mortimers Novelty, from Mortimers Farms, Fair Oak, Eastleigh, Hampshire. She headed back south to West Yorkshire with Messrs Hough, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, for 4300gns.

Another F94L Myostatin, this 19-month-old heifer is a daughter of Mortimers Hurricane and out of Mortimers Glitzy. She was shown successfully as a yearling and two-year-old winning many championships and is now in-calf to Thrunton Fairfax.

Also included on the day was the draft sale from D Smith and Sons’ Lawersbridge herd, which saw prices peak at 2300gns twice.

Firstly, that was for a cow and calf outfit which sold to A Johnston, Sorn, Mauchline, Ayrshire. This three-year-old heifer, Lawersbridge Minx, is a daughter of Lawersbridge Iceberg and out of Redheughs Eba. She had her six-month-old male calf, Lawersbridge Pirate, at foot, which is sired by Whitecliffe Muskateer.

One lot later saw the hammer fall at the same money for another cow and calf outfit selling across to Northern Ireland to Messrs King, Newry, Co Down.

This three-year-old heifer, Lawersbridge Molly, is a daughter of Lawersbridge Iceberg and out of Lawersbridge Gypsy, which goes back to Smithston Dancing Queen. Her nine-month-old heifer calf, Lawersbridge Penny is a daughter of Lawersbridge Iceberg.
