A steady trade was met at Mitchells Auction store cattle sale with Limousin steers selling to £1155 on three occasions for Messrs Robinson, Gateghyll; IR and JM Fearon, Frizington Hall; and finally, Messrs Hodgson, Croft End.

Heifers also sold for the same money this time for a British Blue from Messrs Cottam, Wardwarrow.

The first in-lamb ewes of the season sold to £260 for Texel in-lamb gimmers scanned to have twins from Messrs Mounsey Grange.

A small entry of store lambs sold to a serious trade, peaking at £90 for more Texels from C Lee, Springfield Road.

Averages were up on the week at United Auctions sale of 178 store and breeding cattle, where bullocks and heifers levelled at £729.66 (+£9.72) and £676.19 (+£87.53).

Charolais crosses from Stilligarry topped both the heifers and bullocks at £875 and £1000 respectively.

A small show of sheep met a buoyant trade with lambs averaging £56.04 (+£12.78) and ewes levelling at £40.22 (+£7.09).

Suffolk crosses from Croismorag, North Uist, topped the lambs at £70, whilst Texel crosses led the way in the ewes for Claddach, North Uist, at £82.

A 25-month-old Limousin bullock from Messrs Graham of Longcummercattiff, triumphed at Hope's Auctioneers sale of store cattle, with the whole sale averaging £1024.

Heifers also sold well, peaking at £1285 for a 27-month-old heifer from A and D Smith, Kelmore Hills.

The pre-sale show saw judge, James Crichton, award his champion to a nine-month-old Limousin bullock from Messrs Robinson, Bog Hall, which realised £1100 at sale time.

Reserve honours went to a 15-month-old Blonde heifer from Messrs Greenbank, The Faulds, which later attained £1195.

Lawrie and Symington had 775 store cattle forward for their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 211.65p and 204.31p respectively.

Bullocks topped at £1220 for a Charolais cross from N C Smith, Logan, Lesmahagow, and to 259p for a Saler from Whitehill Farms.

Leading the way among the heifers was a Limousin cross from Messrs Walker, Netherurd Mains, Blyth Bridge, selling to £1190 and pence per kg was topped by more of the same breed this time from Messrs Comrie, Stonebyres, Lanark, at 247p.

All classes met a flying trade among the 1050 cast tups and store hoggs.

Cast tups topped at £126 for Texels from Fallows, Burnton, whilst ewes peaked at £108 for more of the same breed from M Peat, Greenhill.

More of the same breed led the way per head in the bullocks for Knockterra, whilst per head in the heifers saw a Charolais from Caprickhill peak at £1265.

A 322kg Charolais cross bullock from Sorn Mains peaked at 267.10p, whilst topping the pence per kg was a 617kg Limousin from Wester Gartshore.

Charolais crosses again from Sorn Mains also topped the heifers at 263.20p, whilst per head was £1290 paid for a 635kg Simmental cross from Philiphaugh Est.

Also forward were 1571 store and feeding sheep, where trade peaked at £87 for Suffolk hoggs from Little Raith.

British Blue bulls sold to £1000 from Reed and Hill, Lingey Field, Hexham.

A buoyant demand was met at Harrison and Hetherington's opening sale of store cattle, which saw a top of £1190 for Aberdeen-Angus steers from GW Green and Sons, Wandon.

The same home topped the heifers at £1160. Topping the pence per kg was T H and D W Armstrong, Milfield Demesne, at 214.5p for Aberdeen-Angus steers.

Leading the sheep sale was 53kg Texel hoggs which realised £120 for South Ditchburn.

A smaller show was on offer at United Auctions sale of 122 cattle, where Limousin crosses triumphed in all sections.

Bullocks sold to 253.2p for Bainshole, Huntly, and to £1240 from Parrock, Rothiemay, to average 221.9p.

Limousin crosses from Bainshole, Huntly, topped both sections among the heifers to peak at 239.7p and £1115, to level at 212.7p.

On Monday, Wallets Marts Castle Douglas had forward 130 store cattle, where a buyoant demand was met.

Bullocks peaked at £1230 for Saler crosses from Messrs Kerr, Fagra, Dundrennan, and 237.3p from Messrs Allison, Ring of Barfad, Kirkcowan.

Heifers topped at £1120 for Saler also from Fagra with top per kg selling for 242.2p for Limousin crosses from Messrs Burgess, Maryfield, New Abbey.

Some 425 store hoggs were dearer than ever selling to £98 for Texels from Messrs Grierson, Dunmuir Road, Castle Douglas.

Penrith

The annual Bonanza show and sale of 660 store cattle held at Penrith and District Farmers Mart witnessed a large ring side of buyers.

Achieving the top price of the day was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Wales, Thackwood, achieving £1385.

Among the pre-sale show the champion was awarded to a Limousin cross heifer from WE and B Wilson, Undercragg, which went on to realise £1290.

Reserve honours went to a Limousin bullock from EG Tunstall, High Field House, who kindly donated their prize money to Cancer Research UK. This beast later went on to realise £1240.
