Midlock top Lanark Limelights

Bluefaced Leicester gimmers met a similar trade to last year at the Lanark Limelights sale of multi-breed females where crossing types from the Wight family from Midlock, Crawford, topped the sale at £1200 – twice.

First was the reserve champion at the pre-sale show, a gimmer by the J6 Hewgill – the sire of the £37,000 K20 Midlock – while her dam is a full sister to J46 Hewgill. She sold to Matthew Armour, Milton, Beattock, Moffat, carrying three lambs to the £6000 K4 Marriforth, a former sire of the year.

Mr Armour also bought No 2 gimmer from Midlock at the same money. A daughter of a K3 Midlock, out of a home-bred dam by the J2 Marriforth, she is scanned to have triplets to L27 Midlock – last year's champion at the Royal Highland Show.

The third Midlock gimmer, also by the J6 Hewgill but carrying three to Otterburn Lodge, made £1000 selling down to DW Gourlay and Co, Craigmuie, Moniaive, Thornhill, Dumfries.

Judge, Louise McArthur, Cretlevane, backed her decision and purchased her choice of champion at £1100 from Steven and Trevor Fallows, Burnton, New Cumnock, who were selling females for the first time. This ewe hogg is by K4 Alwinton, bought at Hawes for £1000, bred from H47 Dawyck, a ewe hogg bought at Longtown.

Just behind on £1050 was the best from Finlay Robertson, Beeches, Crosswoodhill, West Calder, which headed home with Raymond Baynes, Blackford, Croy, Inverness. This gimmer is a daughter of the J14 Midlock and bred from one of this year's flushing ewes. She is due to have three to the £12,000 L25 Midlock, purchased at Kelso.

A disappointing number of Texels forward saw prices peak at 700gns for a daughter of the 1100gns Springwell Avalanche from Jimmy Frame, Little Galla, Wiston, Biggar. She sold carrying three to Craighead Commander to Campbeltown breeder, J Pirie and Sons, Machrihanish.
