Carlisle

Harrison and Hetherington had forward 1338 head of cattle at their weekly sale at Borderway, comprising of 995 catalogued store cattle, and unentered store bulls and weanlings and 278 calves.

Topping the store cattle at £1360 was a British Blue cross steer from Messrs Beaty, Durdar Farm, Carlisle, whilst heifers peaked at £1340 for a Limousin cross from Messrs Moffat, Stone House, Gretna.

A larger show of weaned cattle were forward seeing cattle trade slightly less on the week. A Limousin cross bullock topped the trade at £920 from Messrs Crosthwaite, Greenclose, Penruddock. The bulls sold to £915 for a Limousin from Messrs Brodie, Cadgillhead Canobie.

The weekly sale of calves saw a smaller entry, however, they continued in high demand with strong well reared calves attracting a premium. Trade peaked at £515 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Lough, South Lough House, Stamfordham, Newcastle.

The monthly sale of beef breeding cattle, was also a huge hit, which topped at £3000 for Limousin cows and calves from Messrs Pattinson, Bonshawside.

On Monday, the firm held their weekly sale of store and breeding sheep, which topped at £117 for Beltex from Messrs Hodgson, Woodend, Egremont.

The opening sale of ewes with lambs, peaked at £114 for Texel cross ewe with a single lamb from James Bailey, Ivanhoe Livestock, Wyvill Grange, Bedale.

All classes sold well at United Auctions' sale of 1879 store cattle, where heifers topped at 279.80p for a Limousin cross from Easter Greenhill, and to £1280 for a Charolais cross from Thirds.

Charolais crosses led the way among the bullocks at 270.70p from Daldowie, and to £1280 from Thirds, to level at 228.20p.

Also forward were 870 store sheep where store hoggs sold to £103 for Texels from Windyhill, whilst the breeding sheep peaked at £143 for in-lamb Mule ewes from Backmuir.

A steady trade was met throughout all classes at Dingwall and Highland Marts' sale of 365 store cattle, where bullocks and heifers averaged 229.9p and 222.3p respectively.

Bullocks (215) sold to 269.4p for 258kg Aberdeen-Angus crosses from Borgie, Skerray, and to £1180 twice for a pair of 535kg Limousin crosses and for a 560kg Limousin cross both from Udale, Poyntzfield.

Charolais crosses topped the heifers pence per kg section at 250.0p twice, firstly for 320kg Charolais crosses from Wester Craiglands, Fortrose, and then for 340kg of the same breed from Druid Temple Farm, Inverness, and top per head at £1310 was a 745kg Simmental cross from Fairburn Farm, Urray.

Young bulls (26) levelled at 194.0p and sold to 211.0p for a 365kg Limousin cross from Ardival, Strathpeffer, and £1085 for a 570kg Aberdeen-Angus from Balavil Estate, Kingussie.

The biggest sale of store cattle this season for Aberdeen and Northern Marts' saw 1734 store cattle forward, which met a strong demand.

Bullocks (898) sold to 269.1p per kg for 392kg Charolais crosses from Castle Grant Home Farm, Grantown on Spey, and to £1300 twice, firstly for a 700kg Limousin cross from Mains of Cookney, Netherley, and again for a 726kg Limousin cross from Mosside of Ballinshoe, Forfar, to level at 220.4p.

A 246kg Bazadaise cross from Barnyards of Badenyoucher, Cornhill, topped the heifers (668) at 256.1p and a 646kg Charolais cross from Rashenlochy, Drumoak, led the way per head at £1290.

The firm also sold 881 ewes and lambs at foot, grit ewes and store lambs including island consignments.

The first ewes with lambs at foot of the season met a strong demand at tremendous rates, selling to £74 for a Mule with lambs from Garvelside, New Pitsligo.

Store lambs sold at the dearest trade witnessed so far this year at the firm, topping at £125 for Texels from Fintry, Turriff.

Ewe lambs peaked at £111 for Mules from Coldhome, Alvah.

A strong show of cattle were forward for Aberdeen and Northern marts' sale of 604 store cattle, which sold to a buoyant demand.

Bullocks averaged 226.9p and sold to 276.9p per kg for Limousin crosses from Mid-Calder, Thurso, and to £1260 for a Charolais cross from Broynach Farm, Thurso.

Charolais crosses dominated the heifers, selling to 264.6p from Stainland and Sibmister Farms, and to £1210 from Gerston Farm, Halkirk, to level at 217.6p.

Caledonian Marts had forward 462 store cattle at their March show and sale, where bullocks sold to 277p per kg for Aberdeen-Angus from J McColl, Blairlusk, Gartocharn, and to £1200 twice for Simmentals from Angle Park Farming, Melville Gate, Ladybank, and from J Bilsland, Spittal, Croftamie.

Charolais from JM Fisher, Meikle Larbrax, topped the heifers at 233p, whilst Simmentals form Angle Park Farming, Melville Gate, Ladybank, peaked at £1160.

Judge of the day, Tommy Taylor, Heatheryhall, Thankerton, tapped out his overall champion to a 480kg Limousin bullock from D and L Graham, Mains of Burnbank, Blairdrummond. Mr Taylor backed his decision and took home his champion for £1190.

Also forward were 537 store hoggs, feeding sheep and grit ewes, with trade achieving similar rates to last week.

Top price at £96 went to Beltex hoggs from H Aird, Harelaw Farm, Crook of Devon.

Lockerbie

On Tuesday, Harrison and Hetherington held their fortnightly sale of store cattle for their special March sale, which met a strong trade throughout.

Limousin bullocks topped at £1180 from DA Wilson, The Belzies, whilst heifers peaked at £1160 for British Blues from Belzies.

Younger cattle were again highly sought after with Limousin bullocks from Messrs Brown, Mossheads, selling to 260p per kg.

Limousin bullocks led the way at Lawrie and Symington's sale of 231 store and breeding cattle, where bullocks and heifers levelled at 211p and 208p respectively.

Topping the sale at £1245 was 630kg Limousin bullocks from HJ Watson and Son, Drumrack, whilst more of the same breed peaked at 247.7p from JH Garbutt and Son, Sketewan.

Heifers sold to £1185 for a 575 kg Simmental from CMR Soutar, Peasiehill, and to 262.5p for 400 kg Limousins from JH Garbutt and Sons, Sketewan.

Breeding cattle sold to £1750 for a Limousin heifer with Limousin heifer calf at foot from Easter Dounie, whilst young bulls peaked at £910 and 207p for 440kg Simmentals from Peasiehill.

Heifers peaked at £1105 for a Blonde from Townhead Croft, and to 238.8p for a Limousin from Auchren.

A busy day was had at C and D Auction Marts' sale on Tuesday having sold 1702 store hoggs and feeding ewes and 1200 breeding sheep.

Store hoggs sold to average £74.20, with trade peaking at £110 for Suffolks from Tarrasfoot.

A strong entry of breeding sheep met a buoyant demand, with lowland ewes selling to the dearest trades, with Texel shearlings selling to £168.

Some 261 entries of store cattle were forward for C and D Auction Marts' fortnightly sale.

The Charolais topped the bullocks at £1125 for Hillhead, whilst Simmentals led the way among the heifers at £1140 twice, both form Innerfield.

More Simmentals topped the bulls at £1020 from Abune the Brae.
