All classes met a buoyant trade at Harrison and Hetherington's weekly sale of 580 store and weanling cattle.

Trade was topped at £1260 for a Limousin cross heifer from I and KM Watson, Howrigg, Wigton. Bullocks sold to £1200 on three occasions from Messrs Watson, High Flowery Hirst, Rowelton, and for two from Messrs Batey, High Knells, Carlisle.

Native cattle peaked at £1100 for an Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Messrs Crichton, Rottington Hall, Whitehaven.

The firm also sold 259 calves, which averaged £260 with a top of £565 on three occasions, all for British Blue bulls from Messrs Forrest Meinfoot Farm, Ecclefechan. Heifers sold to £550 from the same home.

A small but quality entry of ewes and lambs peaked at £64 per head for Texel gimmers from Holmewrangle.

Texels also led the ewes (308) at £120 from Wester Moy, Urray.

Rams and feeding sheep (42) reached £94 for a Charollais ram from Wester Moy.

United Auctions' sale ring saw a full to capacity of buyers adhering to strict government guidelines on social distancing for it's sale of 2005 store cattle and 135 cast cows, where bullocks (1010) and heifers (852) averaged 218.76p per kg and 212.68p respectively.

Bullocks peaked at 303.40p per kg for a 356kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Braes of Grandtully, and to £1290 for a 632kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Garvald Mains.

British Blue cross heifers from Kedzlie Farms, attained 284.30p, whilst top per head was £1295 paid for a 524kg Limousin cross from Upper Obney.

Limousin crosses dominated the young bulls at 204.10p and £1130 both from Airthrey Kerse.

Topping the steers at £1335 was a Limousin from JA and AVN Birkett, Grange Farm, with the same breed leading heifers at £1285 for Ann Sewell, Leesrigg Pasture.

Limousins also topped the 150 bulls, which peaked at £1245 from DA Harrison, Hill House.

All cattle met a brisk trade at Harrison and Hetherington's fortnightly sale of store and grazing cattle, where bullocks and heifers levelled at 221.7p per kg and 215.87p respectively.

Topping the trade at 275p per kg were Limousin cross bullocks from Messrs Ogilvie, Broom, whilst top per head was £1245 for an Aberdeen-Angus bullock from Messrs Walker, Cammerlaws.

A kind donation from J Grieve, The Lee, saw him donate his funds raised from his Limousin cross heifer, to the Borders General Hospital, Covid-19, which realised £1060 or 255p per kg.

Recent high rates were maintained both in the sale ring and on the internet at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' sale of 1660 store cattle.

Simmentals weighing 486kg topped the heifers (755) at 345p per kg from Wester Coltfield, Kinloss, and to £1750 for a British Blue from Torbay, Dufftown, to level at 217.7p per kg.

Bullocks (904) averaged 222p having sold to 273.6p for a 360kg Limousin from Lower Cairnglass, Ardersier, and to £1400 for a 752kg Limousin from Torbay, Dufftown.

A 558kg Charolais topped the bull trade at 190p per kg and £1060 from Bogentassie, Lumphanan.

Earlier this week, the firm sold 231 head of adult breeding cattle including three bulls, where no fewer than 14 outfits made £3000 or more.

A Limousin cross heifer and her Limousin cross bull calf from Messrs Ewart, Easter Dounie, topped the sale at £3850, heifers with calves averaged £2517.92, a rise of £96 on the year.

A British Blue cross second calver with her Limousin cross heifer calf peaked at £2700 from Miller Farms, North Lurg.

Ewes and lambs (1245) met a strong trade for all classes, reaching £81 for a Texel cross with single lambs from Wellheads, Huntly.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold 339 store cattle at their weekly sale, which peaked at £1300 twice; for Aberdeen-Angus bullocks and heifers from Messrs Walton, Flotterton.

Yearling grazing cattle reached £1160 for a Limousin cross heifer from Ian Potts, Redburn, Rookhope, with bullocks following at £1100 for a similar sort from Ken Robinson, Warksfieldhead.

A large show of cast ewes and rams were on sale sold to £136 on two occasions, from WD Howard, Springwood, and Blackburn.

Darlington

The annual 'Stars of the Future' sale of store cattle was held at Darlington Farmers Auction Mart on Monday, which saw just short of 500 head forward.

Steers and heifers levelled at £876 (up £34 on the year) and £781 (up £24) respectively.

Top price of £1140 was paid for a 12-month-old Limousin cross British Blue steer from RA Douglas of Dunbourne, Tenterden, Kent, which sold to M Armitage of Salton, Kirkbymoorside.

The Kent cattle also led the heifer trade, at £1075 on two occasions for Limousins also heading into the Kirbymoorside area as they travelled home with J and R Waind, River House, Brawby.

Young bulls attained £1135 from the Wilsons of Throstlenest Farm, Hollinside, which sold to JA Matten and Sons, Thirsk.

Bullocks sold to £1125 for a Limousin from Messrs Wilson, Belzies, and to 283.3p per kg for more of the same breed from Beyond the Brigg.

Heifers were also extremely pleasing to sell, with British Blues topping at £1090 from Messrs Bell, Haas Side, and to 293.3p for Limousins from the Reddings
