Reduced numbers resulted in a stronger trade at Harrison and Hetherington’s weekly sale of 350 store and weaned cattle.

Top price was £1310 paid for a Charolais cross heifer from Messrs Bowman, Croft House, Penrith, whilst steers reached £1235 for a British Blue from Messrs Ferguson, Sandbed, Longtown.

Weaned cattle sold to £1180 for a Limousin bull from Messrs Thomlinson.

At the annual May sale of bulling heifers, which averaged £1312.73, prices peaked at £2800 for a Limousin cross British Blue from J Gordon and Co, Alford.

On Monday, the firm’s weekly sale of breeding sheep reached £138 for Beltex hoggs with lambs from Messrs Carr, Little Bavington, Capheaton, whilst Mule hoggs with twins reached £71 per life from Messrs Smith and Shepherd, Glebelands, Appleby In Westmoorland.

A strong trade was witnessed for all classes at Dingwall and Highland Marts’ sale of 214 breeding cattle, where trade peaked at £2700 for a Beef Shorthorn cross heifer with a Simmental cross heifer calf from Wester Bleaton Farm.

Heifers with bull calves attained £2650 for a Simmental cross with a Limousin cross calf from Wester Bleaton Farm, Bridge of Cally.

Selling for the same money was a British Blue cross cow with a Charolais cross bull calf from Dell Farm.

United Auctions weekly sale of store and OTM cattle attracted entries of 652 and 133 respectively with bullocks and heifers averaging 226.3p per kg and 221.88p respectively.

Bullocks (346) reached 294.50p per kg for a 253kg Charolais cross from Lawfield, and sold to £1345 for a 652kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Newbank.

Charolais crosses dominated the heifers (255) at 292.60p per kg for a 229kg beast from Lawfield, and to £1240 for a 610kg heifer from Cowans.

Among the young bulls (32), Simmental crosses proved their worth to top the trade, selling at 261.00p per kg from West Brackly, and to £1140 per head from East Merkland. They averaged 207.14per kg.

A Limousin heifer with heifer calf led the way at Hope’s Auctioneers’ sale of breeding cattle, selling to £2550 from Tom Wilson, Wood Farm, Thursby.

All classes met a ready enquiry with regular consignors having repeat customers compete strongly to produce several prices of in excess of £2000 per outfit

Cows with calves sold to a top price of £2000 for a British Blue with heifer calf at foot from Priestcroft.

Trade remained strong among the ewes and lambs that were also forward.

A top price of £150 was achieved on three occasions.

First to make £150 was a Beltex hogg with single lamb from Messrs Stoddart, Hillside, with another two of the same breed hoggs with two lambs from K Hodgson, Prospect House, and Messrs Stoddart, Hillside making the same money.

Mule hoggs with single lambs reached £184 for William Dunlop, Glengennet and Texel hoggs with singles sold to £170 from Messrs Smith, Burnockstone.

TRADE was again up on the week at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 635 store cattle, young bulls and young and weaned calves.

Bullocks (316) averaged 229p per kg and sold to 291.4p for 278kg Limousins from Ledmacoy, Strathdon, and to £1440 for a 702kg of the same breed from Braco Park, Rosehearty.

A 298kg Aberdeen-Angus topped the heifers (261) at 261.7p from Redland, Firth, and to £1390 for 596kg Simmentals from Wallfield, Lochhills, to level at 220.9p.

Charolais led the trade among the 51 bulls at 257.5p from Kinclune, Glenkindie, and to £1170 from Wallfield, to balance out at at 225p.

All classes sold dearer on the week with more hill-type ewes forward for Lawrie and Symington’s weekly sale of 402 ewes and hoggs with lambs at foot,

The sale was topped at £87 per life for Mule hoggs with Charollais lambs at foot from Messrs Fry, Porterstown.

Ewes with lambs hit a top price of £68 per life for Texels from Messrs Jeffrey, Smiddyhill.

The firm also sold 204 store cattle earlier this week, where bullocks and heifers averaged 224.9p per kg and 219.4p respectively.

Bullocks were topped at £1355 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Ledrishbeg, and to 243.6p per kg for a Beef Shorthorn from Netherfauld House.

A Limousin from Netherurd Mains topped the heifers at £1400, whilst Charolais from the same home attained 244.5p.

Hexham

Hexham and Northern Marts’ final sale in the month of May, had a 302 head catalogued entry of store cattle.

Sale leader was a Limousin cross heifer from Joshua White, Troughend, which topped the trade at £1850.

Bullocks also sold well and to a top price of £1340 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Michael Lishman, Fell Lane.

A large show of cast sheep met a steady trade, peaking at £108 for a Texel tup from Alan Lawson, South Farm, whilst store hoggs sold to £90 for a Texel cross from JT Nixon and Sons, Stotsfold.

Trade was again sharper on the previous event at C and D Auction Marts’ fortnightly sale of 244 store cattle where bullocks and heifers averaged 219.5p and 214p per kg respectively.

Cattle from Tarbert topped both the bullocks and heifers at 231.1p per kg and 300p respectively.

Top per head was £1170 paid for an Aberdeen-Angus from High Auchneel

The firm’s spring sale of beef breeding cattle saw 183 heifers with calves at foot forward, which sold to £2350 for two Salers with bull calves at foot from Kildarroch.

On Monday, the firm’s monthly sale of pigs saw entries forward from as far afield as North Yorkshire and the Mull of Kintyre.

Sows and boars sold to £160, baconers to £150, cutters to £105, porkers to £72 and weaners to £58.

ON Monday, Caledonian Marts had forward 237 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 223p per kg and 213p respectively.

Bullocks sold to a top price of 273p per kg for Simmentals from WM Hendry, Immeroin, Balquhidder.

Lead price per head was £1150 on two occasions for Charolais and Limousins both of which were consigned by D Mckenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn.

Charolais from B and M Rozgo, Kilmeny, Islay, topped the heifers at 276p per kg.

Top price per head amongst the heifers was £1100 paid for Limousins from D Mckenzie, Ardgate, Gartocharn.

STORE cattle met the dearest trade of the season at Aberdeen and Northern Marts’ sale of 86 cattle, where bullocks and heifers averaged 232.9p per kg and 223.3p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 277.5p per kg for 382kg Charolais crosses from West Watten, Watten, and to £1230 for a 558kg Simmental from Newton, Swiney.

A 379kg Charolais cross also from West Watten, topped the heifers at 263.9p, and £1060 was achieved on two occasions firstly, for a 458kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Newton, Swiney, and then for a 502kg Simmental Cross from Elzy, Staxigoe.
