Carlisle

A strong trade was witnessed for all shapes and sizes of store cattle forward for Harrison and Hetherington's sale of 572 head.

Sale leader per head at £1390 was a Limousin cross steer from Messrs Beattie, Rattlinggate Farm, Carlisle who sold seven to average £1268.57. Charolais sold to £1340 for two from Messrs Johnstone, Westray, Cockermouth.

Rattlinggate also topped the heifers with another Limousin cross at £1380.

A small entry of weaned cattle saw a sharp trade for bulls which sold to £1310 for two Charolais from Messrs Robinson, New Hall.

The firm's weekly sale of calves, saw 294 head sell to £580 for Limousin bulls and heifers from Messrs Cairns, Broom Hall.

United Auctions sold 742 continental and native-bred stores and young bulls, and 190 out of spec cattle at their weekly sale.

Bullocks (351) sold to 254.00p per kg for a 378kg Charolais cross from Hilton of Cardross, and to £1480 for a 671kg Aberdeen-Angus cross from Burnhouse, to average 218.49p.

Charolais crosses topped heifers (346) at 245.80p for a 480kg entry from Mahaar, and to £1285 for a 622kg lot from Mid Knockglass, to balance out at 218.16p.

On Monday, the firm sold 12,505 store lambs and feeding sheep, which reached £90.50 for Texels from Ashfield.

Averages were mostly down on the week, with Texel crosses levelling at £70.74 (-£2.34), Beltex at £74.05 (+£2.66), Cheviots, £64.13 (+£4.13), Mules £65.40 (-£8.00). Suffolk cross £71.52 (-£4.30), Chev Mule £70.50 (-0.67) and Blackfaces at £41.91 (-£3.03).

Wigton

All classes sold well at Hope's Auctioneers sale of store cattle, which saw trade peak at £1720 for a Limousin heifer from DA Harrison and Co, Hill House.

Bullocks attained £1505 for Limousins from JJ and J Benson, Kirkland Hall.

Younger cattle reached £1285 for Limousin crosses from BJ Harrison, Beck Farm, who also topped the heifers at £1225 with a Charolais cross.

A strong show of breeding sheep were sharper on the year by £15-£20 a head with all classes good to sell.

Ewes peaked at £360 for two-shear Texels from MJ Lawson, Pasture House, with gimmers selling to £390 for Beltex from D Baker, Derwentdale.

Store lambs reached £90 on two occasions for Texels from D and D Aitken of Upper Cleugh, with the sale averaging £75.75.

Heifers were topped at £1440 and 306.4p for a Limousin cross British Blue from Barward.

All classes sold at an increased rate on the year in line with the strong cull ewe trade and higher prime lamb prices at Aberdeen and Northern Marts' opening breeding sheep sale of the season.

The 789 gimmers were topped at £420 for four Beltex from W and D Moir Livestock, Newmill, Rathen, with the gimmer average levelling at £163.19.

The 539 store lambs reached £86 for Texel crosses from Backmuir, Keith, to balance out at £69.25.

Penrith

On Monday, Penrith and District Farmers’ held their fortnightly sale of 308 store cattle, where trade peaked at £1395 for a Limousin cross bullock from Messrs Stamper, Long Meadows.

The same home also achieved £1285 for a Limousin cross British Blue heifer. Long Meadows sold 61 bullocks and heifers to average £1077.13.

A Charolais heifer from M Bindloss and Son, Shap Abbey, also made £1285.

Longtown

On Tuesday, C and D Auction Marts held their weekly sale of 2707 store lambs, where strong short keep lambs and best bred Beltex met a firm trade.

Topping the sale at £110 were Beltex lambs from G and CE Edminson, Middle Farm, Rockcliffe.

A big portion of the sale would be Mules where trade reached £76 from Messrs Carruthers, Merkland.

Oban

An increased entry on the year for United Auctions' Annual Fair Day sale saw 421 smaller store cattle forward, where averages increased by 10p per kg, albeit down slightly per head.

Bullocks and heifers averaged £982.89 and £860.57 respectively.

Charolais crosses from DW Semple and Son, Dippen Farm, topped both the bullocks and heifers per head at £1290 and £1175 respectively.

Top per kg were two 297kg Limousin cross bullocks at 279.5p from N MacDonald, Auchgoyle, whilst heifers reached 292.3p for two 284kg Limousin crosses from T Hamilton, Kilwhipnach.
