Carlisle

A Limousin heifer from Messrs Foster, North View, Carlisle, secured the lead price of £1760 at Harrison and Hetherington’s store cattle sale

More of the same led the steers from Messrs Hope, Albierigg, Canonbie and Messrs Campbell, Carsewalloch, Newton Stewart, with both selling to £1550.

The strong trade for weaned cattle, which sold to £1400 for a British Blue bull from Andrew Kirkbride, Flimby Hall.

Bullocks and heifers peaked at £1125 for British Blue entries from Messrs Carr, Whiteclose Rigg, Longtown.

The 300 calves were topped at £700 by a Limousin heifer from Messrs Wilson, Broomberry, Ayrshire, who also sold the lead priced bull at £560.

Messrs Walton, Allensgreen, Hexham also sold a bull calf at £560.

Breeding cattle sold on the Friday saw bulling heifers sell to £2300 for Limousin crosses from Messrs Muir, Middle, Penrith.

A smaller show of cows and heifers with calves was topped at £3700 for a Limousin cross heifer with calf from Messrs McAlister, Wester Thomason.

Messrs Pattinson, The Flatt, topped the in-calf heifers with a British Blue selling for £1560.

Bullocks (186) and heifers (195) averaged 247.19p per kg and 231.91p respectively at United Auctions’ weekly sale.

A top price of 297.50p per kg was paid for a 279kg Beef Shorthorn cross from Braes of Grandtully, and to £1640 for a 648kg Limousin cross from Lettar of Ballied.

Heifers attained 276.80p for a 233kg Charolais cross from Dyke, and to £1480 for a 552kg for a Limousin cross from Letter Ballied.

Young bulls averaged 203.44p per kg having sold to 253.80p for a Limousin cross from Greenyards, and to £1680 per head for a Simmental cross from Holehouse.

The same day 228 breeding cattle went under the hammer with a top price of £2900 paid for Limousin cross heifers with heifer calves from Derrie.

British Blues from High Crewburn, led the cows with bull calves selling at £2550.

Bulls sold to £2800 for an Aberdeen-Angus from Hallcroft.

Also forward were 498 breeding sheep which sold to a top of £95 for Aberfield ewes with single Texel cross lambs from Otter Est.

The 91 calves and stirks were topped by a Charolais cross heifer selling at £1040 for D King, Old Barn, and to £900 for British Blue cross bullocks from Messrs Howie, Wellhouse.

Bull calves topped at £505 for a British Blue from W Kilpatrick and Son, Craigie Mains, Kilmarknock, with more of the same leading the heifers at £400 for Messrs Dalgleish, Drummullan.

On Tuesday, Lawrie and Symington sold 116 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 241.4p per kg and 233.46p respectively.

Limousin crosses led all sections with a 652kg bullock and 539kg heifers from Wester Walston, making £1490 and £1240 respectively.

Cattle from Bluebell, were also in demand when a 346kg bullock made 315p, and a 364kg heifer realised 269.2p.

Dairy bullocks peaked at £945 from Blackburn Mains to average 191p.

On Monday, Caledonian Marts had forward 248 store cattle at their fortnightly sale, where bullocks and heifers averaged 238p per kg and 229p respectively.

Bullocks sold to 290p for Limousins from C McMillan, Tallant, Isle of Islay, and to £1630 for Shorthorns from W Taylor and Son, Jawpark, Slamannan.

On the heifer front it was Charolais from R Purdon, Easterton, Caldercruix, that made 273p, with Aberdeen-Angus making £1340 for C McLaren, Cairney, Whitburn.

An overall sale average of £1103.66 was achieved at Hexham and Northern Marts’ weekly sale of 270 store cattle and suckled calves.

Sale leader was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Woodman, Great Chesters, which realised £1680.

More of the same topped the steers at £1650 for TG Temple and Son, Ingoe Low Hall.

The monthly sale of breeding cattle also met a solid trade, reaching a high of £3500 for a Limousin heifer with heifer calf at foot from Messrs Foley Brothers, Mirlaw House.

Store hoggs also met a strong trade selling to a top of £150 for a Texel from Thomas Telford, Pasture Hill, Seahouses, whilst breeding sheep peaked at £120 per life for Texel cross gimmers with lambs from JD Featherstone, Earnwell House.

Averages rose on the year at United Auctions’ sale of 191 store cattle, where bullocks cashed in at £967.57 (+ £14.11) and heifers balanced out at £914.72 (+£11.03).

Limousin crosses from Coultorsay, topped the gross trade at £1270 for bullocks, and to £1370 for heifers.

Top price per kg was 298p for bullocks from Kintra, and to 402p for heifers from Ardnave.

Darlington

A Limousin heifer from J and F Hartley and Sons, topped Darlington Farmers Auction Mart's store cattle sale this week when, selling at £1445.

The sale, which saw heifers average £842.29 (+£50.50 on the year), saw steers sell to £1350 for a Limousin from B Watson, Baal Hill. Heifers cashed in at £852.16 (-£25.64).

A Suffolk ewe with twins from DJL Livestock, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, topped the breeding sheep at £305.

Hoggs with lambs were also in demand selling to £300 on three occasions for a Texel with single lamb from JV Hodgson and Son, Piercebridge.
