Farming auction at Barnard Castle saw top price of £6000

A GOOD quality entry of show potential calves was forward at Barnard Castle where a top price of £6000 was paid for the pre-sale champion with a further 12 selling at £3000 and above.

Judge Shaun Marsh, Frith Farm, Kent, backed his decision and bought his choice of champion – a black British Blue heifer from F and MP Allinson and Son, West Briscoe, Baldersdale. West Briscoe sold 13 calves to average £2700.

The steer champion from Messrs Hutchinson, Valley Farm, Bowes, topped the section when selling for £4200 to Neil Slack and E Haughan, Plum Tree House, Penrith.

James Crichton, Egremont, judged the unhaltered section which saw 32 head forward. Champion here was a Limousin cross heifer from B and S Teasdale and Son, Lynesack, Bishop Auckland, that sold for £3500.

The reserve, a British Blue cross steer from KO Stones, Nune Cote Nook, made £2220

Most of the cattle forward were aged seven to 12 months. Steers averaged £2149, up £228 on last year, with heifers at £2237 (+£282). Bulls cashed in at £2162 (+£323).

Outwith the show cattle, breeding cattle sold to £5000 for a 3½-year-old British Blue bull from D, EM and ID Brown, Lummas House while Banknock-based Messrs McAlister, West Thomaston, sold a British Blue cross heifer with Limousin heifer calf at foot for £4800.
