Audiences worldwide were treated to a quality line-up of continental cattle which were showcased in front of all of the young beef judges for a joint points scoring system for the inter-breed individual and pairs judging.

Receiving the solo inter-breed tap-out was the Limousin heifer, Grahams Precious, from Robert and Jean Graham, Bridge of Allan, Stirling. Coming out from the largest beef breed section of the Showcase, this 17-month-old heifer was brought out by Drew Hyslop.

Bagging the blue and white ticket was the senior Charolais bull, Maerdy Morwr, from AJR Farms, Ellon. This five-year-old stock bull was on his first outing being brought out by brothers, James and Andrew Reid. He was purchased privately three years ago from Esmor Evans, Maerdy, for £25,000, and was sired by Maerdy Dynamite and out of Maerdy Fee.

The Charolais remained popular amongst the inter-breed pairs, with Maerdy Morwr teaming up with Harestone Mammamia from the Barclay family, of Harestone Livestock, Aberdeenshire. This five-year-old cow also has the backing of Maerdy blood, being sired by Maerdy Dublin and out of the home-bred dam, Harestone Brigitte.

The inter-breed Limousin champion paired up with the reserve breed champion, Springsett President, to take the runner up in the pair’s competition.

Producing the other half of the outfit was Dougie McBeath and Sarah Jane Jessop, Stirling, with their May, 2019-born bull. This embryo calf is sired by Gunnerfleet Lion and out of the former reserve Royal Highland Show champion, Poolehall Iris.

Amy Vance, Bridgehouse, Whithorn, took the overall continental cattle young handlers.

British Blonde

It was a tremendous show for Thor Atkinson, Newlands, Cumbria, who not only landed the British Blonde championship, but also managed to secure the Charolais and British Blue reserve champions at the Showcase event. The show winner, Blackwater Maple is a daughter of Blackwater Heston, out of Blackwater April, and was brought out with her heifer calf at foot, Santana. This March five-year-old cow is now destined for the Great Yorkshire Show along with any other upcoming shows.

Judge, Ellis Mutch, Aberdeenshire, tapped out his reserve to the August, 2019-born bull, Lochhead Proper Damn Good Bull, from brothers William and Donald Laird and their nephew, Liam. This home-bred bull is a son of Baileys Jasper and out of a home-bred dam.

British Blue

Dumfries-shire based breeder, Kevin Watret, Annan, had a field day among the small selection of British Blues with the yearling heifer, Solway View Pearl. The first outing for this heifer, she was brought out by stockman, Ali Jackson, being by the British Blue AI sire Dodou De St Remacle. The dam is from a show winning family having herself stood breed champion in 2019 and the grand dam did the treble – Highland, Great Yorkshire and the Welsh shows – in 2013, and the fourth generation was also a Highland Show champion, allowing Kevin to bag his ninth championship at Ingliston.

Having just four breeding females in his herd didn’t stop Thor Atkinson securing the reserve championship with Arradfoot Petra, catching the eye of the judge, Stephanie Dick, Stirling. This January, 2020-born embryo heifer calf is sired by Langoureux De Fooz and out of Croftends Khole.

British Charolais

Judge, Ellis Mutch, Aberdeenshire, found his champion in the senior bull, Maerdy Morwr from AJR Farms, Ellon.

This five-year-old bull was on his first outing being brought out by brothers James and Andrew Reid, who have brought out five Royal Highland Show champions over the years, now running 30 pedigree Charolais cows along with 100 Aberdeen-Angus. This stock bull was purchased privately three years ago from DE Evans, Maerdy, for £25,000, being a son of Maerdy Dynamite and out of Maerdy Fee.

Another prize to add in to the kist for Thor Atkinson was the blue and white sash among the Charolais. Keeping the smiles on the family’s faces was the March, 2020-born heifer, Tophill Roxanne, which was purchased from Andrew Stott, at Stirling, in February. She is a daughter of Hackleton Largerlout and out of Hackleton Hetty, which is sired by Mulroog Alpine.

Limousins

Securing the championship amongst the largest beef section was the 17-month-old heifer, Grahams Precious, from Robert and Jean Graham, Bridge of Allan, Stirling, brought out by stockman, Drew Hyslop.

Judge, John Graham, Stirling, took a fancy for this classy heifer, sired by Claragh Franco, a sire which had previously bred Grahams Lily, which stood champion at the Red Ladies Sale in 2016 before selling for 32,000gns, as well as two weaned calves, Grahams Natalie and Nashville, which made 38,000gns and 20,000gns, respectively.

The dam was the Ampertaine Elgin-sired show-winning daughter, Grahams Melody, a former reserve inter-breed champion at the Royal Welsh and Great Yorkshire shows in 2018, as well as having bred Grahams Rooney, which realised 28,000gns at Carlisle earlier this year.

Bagging the blue and white ticket was Springsett President from Dougie McBeath and Sarah Jane Jessop, Stirling. This May, 2019-born bull was previously awarded the reserve junior champion at Stars of the Future staged at Stirling, in 2019, as a five-month-old calf and is due to take on the Great Yorkshire Show next month. An embryo calf, he was sired by Gunnerfleet Lion and out of the former reserve Royal Highland Show champion, Poolehall Iris.

Simmental

The standout bull among the Simmentals was Drumsleed Hivy, from Morag and Gerald Smith, Fordoun, who caught the eye of the judge, Tom Bruce, Aberdeenshire, on the day.

The Smiths are now running 100 pure cows along with 100 cross cattle and their champion was the six-year-old pedigree stock bull, which is a former male champion at Ingliston in 2019. His first son made 11,000gns in February at Stirling Bull Sales.

Hivy is sired by Haystar Cracker, which was purchased in Stirling for 4800gns having bred a few show stars and the dam, Drumsleed Valonia, goes back to a home-bred bull.

Runner-up was the 20-month-old heifer, Annick Fresia’s Kiki, from Lachlan Quarm, Irvine, Ayrshire, and was brought out by his part-time stockmen, Andrew Perratt and Matt Gilliland. This boy is by the 15,000gns Wolfstar Gold Digger, which bred the Stars of the Future champion in 2019, and the dam is Annick Whitney’s Fresia.

Commercial cattle

Topping the commercial cattle section was the August, 2020-born heifer calf, A’va Butt, from Wilson Peters, Monzie, Crieff.

Purchased in April at Carlisle, this calf is bred by John Robertson, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry, and is set up to take on the winter show circuit and potentially kept for next year’s show circuit, although it won’t make the round-trip back to Ingliston as Wilson is next in line as the commercial cattle judge. This heifer calf was just the second time this exhibitor had secured the championship at Ingliston. She’s a daughter of Warehams Mickey and out of a Limousin cross dam.

Having the job of placing the commercial cattle was James Graham, Stirling, who tapped out as reserve an unusual coloured brown and white cross heifer, Cream Cracker. The British Blue cross Charolais, from Kevin Watret, Annan, was the talk of the showring, being a daughter of Anside Foreman and out of the treble British Blue show winner, Solway View Elegance, and is now destined for the Great Yorkshire Show this year.

Salers

Catching the eye of the Salers judge, Adam Crockett, Roxburghshire, was the young bull, Rednock Panther Poll, from Gill and Malcolm Pye, Port of Menteith, who are now running 120 pedigree cows.

Stockman, Thomas Slowen brought out the January, 2020-born bull, a son of the home-bred bull Rigel Munro Poll and out of Rigel Cindy.

Cleuchhead Mhairi secured the reserve honours in the section for Rob, Kath, Iain and Sarah Livesey, Firth Farm, Melrose.

This March, 2016-born cow had previously taken the championship at the Great Yorkshire Show in 2016 as a calf at foot with her dam, but she’s now running with her own third calf at foot, the bull calf, Rob Roy, which is by an imported sire.

Mhairi is sired by Drumlegagh Brandon, which was purchased privately in Ireland as a twin, and out of the show cow, Cleuchhead Mhairi.
