Averages improved on the year for bulls and females at a Beef Shorthorn sale at Carlisle, where a top price of 8000gns achieved.

It was the pre-sale champion, Scorpio of Skaillhouse, from Caithness breeder, C Macadie, Skaill, Thurso, selected by the judge, Tom Elliot of the Kislingbury herd, that secured the lead bid. Sired by Podehole Rock Nebula, this 26-month-old bull is bred from Eva Wildeyes 13 of Skaillhouse, which goes back to Glenisla Faust. He sold to Messrs Carmichael, Barwick Hill, Ponteland, Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Best from Allan Jackson of Headlind Partners, Woodyett, Kirkfieldbank, Lanark, at 7500gns, was the November 2022-born bull, Headlind Stockman. Second at the pre-sale show, he is a son of Dunsyre Horatio and out of the Tofts Atlas daughter, Headline Holly Nutmeg. He travels up to Turriff with Messrs Sleigh and Son, Fyvie.

The last Shorthorn bull in the ring achieved 5800gns for GL Riby, Low Stonehills, Fraisthorpe, Bridlington. That was paid for the December 2022-born entry, Stonehills Sandy Lane, a third prize winner that was purchased by Messrs Foy, Conder Green, Lancashire. Sired by Podehole Rock Master, he is out of Stonehills Bold Cora12, which goes back to Faughhill Ivan.

Another similarly aged and bred bull from the same home made 4500gns. Stonehills Starburst, bred from Stonehills Lovely Jason 4, won his class and sold down to Yorkshire with Messrs Hugill, Sproxton.

The reserve champion, Llwynhywel Sidekick, from Messrs Evans and Price, LLwynhywel, Rhosygarth, Llanilar, made 5000gns when the hammer fell to Messrs Hagon, Ulverston, Cumbria. This 15-month-old is full of Canadian breeding being sired by Diamond Captain Mark and out of Crawfdown Miss Lea.

Redstones Snowman achieved 5000gns for Charlie Fletcher and Jack Kay, Blackcleugh, Eaglesfield, Lockerbie. Reserve male champion at the Beef Expo 2023, this September 2023-born entry is a son of Napoleon of Upsall, out of Runleymill Miss Ramsden Flo 12. A red ticket holder, he was knocked down to Messrs Longlands, Birtley, Northumberland.

David and Tom Bradley Farmer, Parkgate, Dumfries, sold their third prize bull, Meonside Sherekhan, for 4500gns to Messrs Elliot, Kelso, Roxburghshire. July 2022-born, he is a son of Meonside King Kong, whilst the dam, Coldrochie Irania Rosebud, goes back to Knockenjig Foremost

The champion took the top price among the females when Sandwick Scrumptous Margo from A and C Ivinson, Sandwick, Townhead, Ousby, sold for 4200gns.

This March 2022-born heifer is the first daughter from Fearn Night Watchman to be sold, and is out of Sandwick Mistletoe Margo, which goes back to Glenisla Jack Frost. Having run with Sandwick Prefer-a-bull, she sold to Messrs Page, Newport, North Humberside.

Tom and Ian Walling, Farmstock Genetics, Over Whitlaw, Selkirk, sold Crichton Ballerina 1334, for 3800gns to Messrs Hodgson, Holmrook, Cumbria. This fourth prize heifer is a daughter of Coxhill Panther, out of Crichton Ballerina 979.

Just behind on 3600gns, was the 28-month-old heifer, Kimrina Saphire, from CJ Ward, Low Brock Rigg, Glaisdale, Whitby. A daughter of Craigfaddock Khan, out of Kimrina Princess Gypsy, she stood third in her class at the pre-sale show. Served by Kimrina Stanley, she sold to Messrs Holgate, Settle, North Yorkshire.

Cutthorn Camilla’s Shiela then made 3400gns for AJ Gibson Farming, Cut Thorn Farm, Gibside, Burnopfield. This July 2022-born heifer is the first daughter of Cairnsmore Phenomenal to be sold out of Cutthorn Camilla’s Pippa. The hammer fell to Messrs Bellas and Son, Appleby in Westmorland, Cumbria.
